Has anyone seen the feature in 911 and PW this month on the front-engined cars? Prize for the first person to find Wally! [:D][:D]

They didn't rate the turbo so I feel honour bound to diss the article but I have to say it was otherwise very good [:)] I didn't bother to renew 911 & 911 world at christmas but my mum bought me a subscription for my birthday. Glad she did now [:D]

Never mind 911 & PW, how about July's GT Porsche, the purely Porsche magazine article on Porsche Turbo buying guide which states:
"Porsche Turbos, NO MATTER THE MODEL are all special, all accomplished pieces of engineering and the best in their field. To drive ANY Porsche Turbo is an experience, to own one during your motoring life time is a box every Porschefile and petrolhead must tick"

Makes me feel rather humble as the proud owner of an '88 Porsche 944 Turbo S in Zermatt Silver with Black leather interior. The original purchaser must have bottled out of Silver Rose and Burgundy plaid. But the car car itself must be the best value perfomance per pound (stirling) on the market.

No, the man is right, the 944Turbo has shed loads of lag, and you have to have a sort of inversley proportional right foot. In the Axminster, and back it off as the boost arrives. He isn't so accurate about the lag in the 924 turbo. It is far less noticable, and as I drive a 924T every day I venture to suggest that the 924t is more responsive, and I am in a more or less unique position to be able to make back to back comparisons.
Lest we forget, Steve Kevlin successfully defended his title crown in one of the Porsche Championships in an S2 CAB, so lets get wooly handing into perspective.

That was my turbo front wing in the GT purely porsche article this month[8D] impressive eh!??

A cab with a roll cage that was therefore stiffened and selected for its reduced CoG I believe (due to the extra bracing in the floor), and presumably in a class where the lighter weight of the coupe wasn't able to be an advantage. Cabs are wibbly compared to coupes, possibly not compared to say a Saab convertible, but wibbly all the same.

I do agree that the 944T has a lot of latency - I have said before and I still maintain that as a standard car it's horrible to drive (the 250 significantly more so than the 220) and a S2 is much better. (The cab referenced above was an S2 also I believe).

And I would venture that a 20year old standard turbo would be even more nasty to drive than a new one was - nothing that cant be fixed though, and they have so much potential its almost criminal to leave them standard,
Tony

I agree with you Tony. There is a point of view backed up by lots of circumstantial evidence to suggest Porsche held back with the 944T so even in its hayday it wasn't achieving its full potential. This is highlighed by the fact that for under a grand of off-the-shelf parts that can be installed in a few hours you can release at least 40bhp from a 220T and 50bhp from a 250T and substantially reduce turbo lag without cranking up the boost pressures to silly levels. So the engine is hardly highly tuned in standard form.

On the contrary we don't think we own the finest sportscars known to man. If we did then we wouldn't spend alot of time and money tinkering with them! To me the S2 is like a pint of beer - extremely enjoyable and something you like to indulge yourself in as often as possible. A turbo is like Crack Cocaine (not that i'm talking from experience). It becomes something you can't imagine living without.
