911 crashes...insurance

Good afternoon all,

I Just thought I would share some information with you all as I was quite astounded...

I had a quote last month on classical insurance from Sureterm direct for my C2 Targa LHD with Porsche Immobiliser etc which was £611 (I'm 29 with 2 years no claims).

I just had another quote with no changes which was £1900 ish via the net so I rang and queried the vast increase...

Apparently in the last 12 weeks there has been lots of 911 crashes on the insurers books and they have removed the 911 from their classic insurance?!?!!?

(P.S long time no see[;)]... busy is not the word!)

Just renewed with ClassicLine, fully comp, self and spouse, 11k valuation, 5000 miles, £212, no breakdown cover but only £100XS! Both over 50 (in fact, just either side of 60). Look around!

Sounds to me like either you or the car just don't fit their criteria of "business wanted" this year. I've had the same with my public liability, where a company just didn't want landscape companies on their books any more so they increased the price to drive customers away.

Shop around, there are plenty of companies out there but they all have very different guidelines so other people's recommendations might be useless for you.

Certainly Hegerty have moved away from 90s cars with trackday cover. They cited claims as the reason, lost a lot of us as a result. I'll need to find a new insurer in the start of next year.

As Paul said there are times when their business model changes. Many of us that regularly track our cars saw the same with Hagerty recently. They decided they no longer wanted the risk of providing trackday cover so drove us away with a combination of only offering lower annual mileage and higher premiums.

Hmm...

Its an interesting topic, but it seems there is only ever one winner in these cases.

I've tried Hagerty, but they wont insure me as I dont have a daily driver (I live in London so I dont need one and I'm not willing to put commuter miles on my 964).

Methinks I will keep searching until I find the right one.

Thanks for your replies guys :)

I am 30 years old, but have had by 964 c4 cab for 4 years. I insure it now with a company called Bishop Calway Insurance (www.bishopcalway.co.uk). I have been with them for three years now on a classic policy, each year it has been £199 for 3000 miles pa...every year it amazes me! Hope this helps.

Just received a letter from Hagerty saying that they won't renew my policy & I should look elsewhere.

I don't track
I have a daily driver
I limited to 3,000 miles per year

Have they stopped insuring our cars altogether then?

They appear to have introduced a stupid rule of not insuring anything made after 1990. I believe they only want to insure cars that spend most of the time in their garage!!!

mines a 91 and have just renude with them on the 15 nov £6 increase from last year tried the rest this was the best may be an age thing [:)]

Turns out its because my car is kept on the driveway & not in the garage & they don't have a category for a car kept behind a 6 foot high, solid wooden padlocked gate which is most probably just as secure as a garage...[&:]

I've filled in an inquiry form from that Bishops Calway anyway...

Classicline were the only company who would cover me on a classic policy( ie I have another car, limited mileage etc) with it on a private drive but not garaged. It was an absolute "no" from every other company I tried.

Thanks, I'll try them as well. Was the quote in line with previous year or did they use the absence of a garage as an excuse to wrack up premium?

Mine's never been garaged, so they've covered it for 7 years now. They did hike it up by about 10% when I changed from a Lux to an S2 with an agreed value more than double, not bad IMO.

I'm having trouble finding anything under £1500... again!

It seems this is the price I will have to pay for the pleasure, but most classic insurers are coming in very high!

Not having a garage is certainly a negative with these cars... easier said than done in London though :S

Are you only trying Classic policies?

I've found the basic requirements for a classic policy are that it's not your main car, so you need to show evidence of another one, it's an occasional car so a limited mileage, and all bar Classicline wanted it garaged. You might find, as you don't fit at least two of these, a normal insurer would be a better bet?

As always, other people's recommendations aren't much use as their circumstances won't match yours. For that money I'd take a day off work and call around, everything from the price-comparison type companies through specialist brokers.

Try Admiral I have a multiple car policy, 964 is ungaraged , unlimited miles, business class covered , used every day less than £300 full comp !

I had a policy with admiral last year for £1400 and it was ok, but I was looking for agreed value from a classic insurer.

I'm also looking into a garage which works out at £80 a month.

I was also toying with the idea of having a second car (I dont really need one), but I'd rather spend money on my 964 wishlist to be honest.

Its a difficult one, which I agree is only going to be resolved by spending a day on the phone.

Cheers for all the info guys!

Got a quote off Confused.com with a company called Performance Direct which looked really good.

Anyone have experience of them?
