911 SC backfiring

I had my car's engine rebuild by a reputable specialist garage about 18 months ago, but the revs started to drop and the car kept backfiring and stalling while I was away on a short holiday not long afterwards. The problem stopped while I was away, so I thought no more about it and assumed it was just teething trouble. However, the problem has started again recently - is this something I need to worry about? The garage I took it to for the rebuild is some distance from my home and I don't want to drive the car too far. Plus I would like a second opinion anyway because when I phoned the garage to tell them about the problem, they did not offer any opinion as to what the problem might be and simply told me to get the car towed over to them to have a look at it, which will be expensive and will leave me stranded without a car miles from home! Does anyone have any idea as to what the issue could be? Also, can anyone recommend a specialist garage in Suffolk to give the car a health check?

If no specific misfire is it timing? Has distributor become loose in its clamp and able to rotate.

If misfire, is HT lead breaking down or, even more likely, a plug connector? - common intermittent
problem causing backfire of unburnt fuel.

Sticking (exhaust) valve?

Sorry can't help re specialist support in your part of the country but I would have though a local
mobile tuning firm (yellow pages) would be able to establish economically the likely cause - giving your
ignition and fuelling system a basic once over, even if you would want to give it to a Porsche specialist to fix
it.

I don't know where in Suffolk you are, but if you are near the Essex border, I can recommend Autostrasse in Coggeshall. They maintained my 3.2 Carrera until I purchased it and if I didn't live so far away (in Dorset) I wouldn't have hestitated to continue using them. Their reputation is exemplary.

Could be an air leak on the induction side or as has been said timing out! If you get stuck give me a call 01449 777911 Berny.

Thank you all for your help - much appreciated. I will see if I can get a mobile tuning firm to come and have a look, as suggested, because I'm a bit loath to drive the car anywhere at the moment. Berny, thanks for your number - if I am still stuck, I may take you up on your offer!

Hi HB, I would strongly advise against getting anyone but a specialist to look at your SC, YOU ARE ASKING FOR TROUBLE! Go and see Berny, he will sort your car out for you, the point of joining a forum or club like this is to pick the experienced brains everybody here, so take heed don't use a mobile service that you have no information about. The money it will cost to get it trailered will be peanuts compared to an engine rebuild. Berny is mustard and is near Stowe. Good luck, sounds like a minor problem.

Thanks for the advice Bones. I'll see if Berny can have a look for me - he's not too far away and I don't mind driving short-ish distances. It's only if I have been driving for a while that the problem seems to occur. I hope you're right and that it is a minor problem because I have spent a small fortune on the car over the past couple of years, plus the bodywork now needs some attention too!

+1 for Berny, near Stowmarket (not Stowe!). He maintains many of the older R12 cars, just doesn't make a noise about it. Great reputation.

Just an update on this, we had the car in to check! lots of small problems not down to just one thing, trace in distributor cap and fuel mixture out, also trace in coil! Replaced cap and rota adjusted fuel ect, would have replaced coil but problems with Bosch coils at the moment! We had a call from Hells Bells on Friday to say car is running better than it had for years. Berny.

Yes, not best pleased with the previous garage because they clearly did not finish the job after replacing most of the engine parts!

Thanks Bones for this recommendation and also to Berny for getting in touch. I am extremely pleased with the advice and service I have had from Berny and Andy and will be taking my car to them from now on! As Berny said, the car is now running better than it has for years.

Glad you got it sorted, Berny is the man! If you're new to Porsche ownership always seek recommendations before getting work done whether mechanical or cosmetic.
