So, a mate who knows that you are well into Porsches asks if you can advise him.....

He has a friend who has finally saved enough pocket money to buy the car of their dreams, an early 911 SC.

He has asked me if I have any ideas on where are good websites, dealers etc to look. Even better if you guys know of someone who is a reputable dealer!

The buyer is young and cute too and will be very grateful if you help her!! - or so he says[:)]

Any advice gratefully received.

Well, a big thanks to all the SC owners in the club....

Your overwhelming number of helpful posts on this tricky subject has been errrr, ummm, staggering????[:-]

Guess I'll have to give them some sound advice of my own.....[:D]

Er sorry Tim I completely missed this but my view may be unhelpful anyway, I wouldn't recommend any dealers as you pay a premium for a car you can get for less elsewhere. However if you don't mind paying a premium then they may have the car for you,. Best places to look are specialist Porsche mag's. Always get a PPI and do loads of reseasrch on the model. Get to know someone who owns one maybe through the club , is your 'friend' a P.C.G.B. memeber? if not maybe he/she should join and get along to some local meetings etc.

Give us a break - we don't all log on every hour you know [:(]

Having bought er, one SC - my advice - read up on the car and buy privately. The downside of that being that you'll see a lot of rubbish. The upside is that you will spot the better ones rather more quickly. Going to a dealer ? You can't guarantee not buying a turkey from them but you may get some sort of warranty.

Ask around the independants as they may know of cars for sale and will certainly know the better ones. And do get an independant inspection !!!!!

Get hold of a copy of Peter Morgans guide to buying a 911SC - usually advertised in the back of 911&PW. He also does inspections if you hand over some dosh.

Having just dipped my toe in the murky world of 22 year old sc's all i cansay is see as many as poss. That way you can guage condition etc. I fell lucky after about 3 mths and have never looked back. I love it. so far it has been painless.

Tim, there were a few previous threads on buying SC's, will try to find some links for you - does your buyer want a coupe or targa and do you know what the budget is? Our own Tim (AirCooledExcellence) has a nice Targa up for grabs, thought he would come in on this thread to be honest - all the hard work done, body just refurbed, bilsteins, best wheels & SSI exhaust fitted and wants offers only just into 5 figures for it, sounds like a good deal to me and I'm a tight-fisted motor trade anorak. Beautiful car throughout and well worth looking at.

Things to avoid - all commonsense: rust, clunky gearboxes (dodgy synchros in second and third), cars with little or no history/bills/receipts, shredded tyres etc.

Places to look for rot; round window edges, by headlamps, particularly in leading edge of wings, filler flap, bonnet, front panel (lift bonnet and look under slam panel), A posts - open doors and look at hinge mounting points: sills (jacking points), b posts - look where door latches fitted and where sill curves up to meet door slam panel, rot here can mean kidney bowls and that is a big job.

There are lots of cars out there, the untidy ones outnumber the almost minters by minimum 7 to 3 in my experience. Personally I would set a spec to find first and then start looking. Detailed telephone conversations with sellers in advance, travel as far as you have to to find a good one as the best are worth travelling for, I went miles and miles for mine and it's absolutely ace.

PPI's; Peter as mentioned (he is not too far from you; Wiltshire) or just take it to the best person local to where the car is. For the older cars (including SC's) I recommend Tuthills up here, Bones uses Chris Turner (London), others might say Machtech etc etc, you have to find a car somewhere first though. If you see something you like up this way (Northants/Warks/Oxon borders), I will have a spin out and look at it for you if you like.

Good luck mate, JG

Wow! Thanks guys....

I forgot its only me Helen and Mark B that are permanantly logged on. [:-]

My SC is soon to be for sale, and you are welcome to look at it. Black, red leather interior, LHD, 1982.

I can't give you much more advice than the others here, I agree you should look and drive as many as possible. I bought my only SC of a car collector in Holland who had an amazing range of cars and was clearly car bonkers, he was moving house and 3 of his 12 cars had to go. He imported the car from Switzerland, and when looking at the Swiss documents it made me very happy about the history of the car.

Apart from history, the drive and obvious condition, I would say if there is any chance of getting the car up on a ramp to have a good look at the underneath, you will tell so much more from the underneath, rust, condition of all the bushes and suspension, oil leaks, pipes, exhausts etc.

Anyway, happy hunting.

James.
