911 sc jammed starter

can anyone help with my son inlaws 911sc 1980, He has had a jammed starter motor. we have removed starter too find pieces of metal stuck between fly wheel and starter motor teeth, none of which are part of starter. we re-assembled and tried to start but she turned over with a grinding noise. has anyone got any ideas?
someone did suggest it maybe part of thrust bearing?
 
Whatever is the cause it sounds like an engine out & split from the box to determine
the source of the metal fragments.
Even if it had started without any grinding noise, pieces of metal large enough to jam
a starter gear floating about does not sound good [:mad:]
