In Autocar, 25th June, they took 10 cars and tried to find out which would be the best/fastest in the real world. Not by testing 0-60 sprint times, or blasting round a track, but along a B road in Wales that is 20-30 miles long with a mixture of bends, straights, etc.
They took
911 (996) Turbo
Noble M12 GTO 3
TVR Tuscan S
Mitsubishi Evo VIII Extreme
Lamborghini Murcielago
BMW M3
Caterham R300
Vauxhall VX220 Turbo
Ford Focus RS
Renault Clio Cup
Surprisingly for them the Mitsubishi wasn' t quick enough.
They were looking for pace, ease of driving, confidence inspiring performance, etc.
Anway the battle came down to the Noble and the 911, once the others were eliminated.
The winner was the 911 Turbo.
They summed it up with " You just never, ever, want to give it back."
(They also have an article on the new V10 Lamborghini Gallardo. I' m not convinced about the rear end styling, particularly the lights, but the rest looks pretty good. The performance figues struggled due to a dodgy gearbox on the test car. Even so it appears to be geared too high.)
