I keep looking at the price's of the 911 (930) turbo, what is a good price for one,[&o]i know you get what you pay for[8|]

and what should be the first thing i look for when buying one ?

How long is a piece of string?
Cheapest 930 I've seen this year went for £10000 - most expensively priced was £85000 (admittedly an LE with only 40 miles on clock!); there are good ones to be had for between £15000 and £25000.
What to look for?
In the absence of a thorough pre-purchase inspection by someone who understands 911's in general and 930's in particular (which I would strongly advise); documentary evidence of a recent major service at a reputable specialist, and a thorough examination of the bodywork for evidence of poorly repaired bodywork.
Happy hunting!

JG,
What do you want from the car?
Before I bought mine I viewed various models 964's, 3.2's etc but always fancied the 930 turbo, as it's the car I've grown up with on my bedroom walls.
I ended up getting a '88 four speed with little in the way of history. Bad move I hear you all say. Well after a few months of trouble free driving it found itself in the garage for numerous reasons, subsequently I have doubled the history in little over a year. So yes I'd be in agreement with you.

The problem with buying a turbo is it doesn't take long before you start thinking about various upgrades to get even more power! I am no exception to this rule. A short shift gear change, 1bar boost spring & an induction kit were my first purchases. These incereased the output by 35bhp at the flywheel. Perhaps the biggest expense came when I took her in to have an oil leak rectified. I popped into the garage one day to see my exhaust system on the floor, rusted through. With the exception of my rear box (oo-er) the whole thing needed replacing. I decided to go for the sports exhaust header system (supplied by 9m). Whilst that was in transit I found a K27 turbocharger, which I bought second hand and have has re-conned & also a 'powerhaus' intercooler. Should be getting my beast back sometime this week with the expectation of somewhere close to 400 horses under my right foot.
Yeah it's been in and out of the garage on numerous occasions and I've spend a relative furtune on her but my initial outlay was between 5 & 8k less than a fully documented beast, so all in all in my eye I've come out about even.

I guess my point is that if your looking to 'mod' up the car and really get the most out of it then I can't see any great advantage of spending £25k plus or whatever to then go and shell out thousand extra on top.

I read with interest the modifications you have made to your 930. In particular, the short shift gear change. Like you, I have a 1988 4 gear 930 and have wondered if there was anything that could be done about the gear change. So what is involved and at roughly what cost? Also, do you end up with a completely different gear lever set up etc? As you can tell, I'm not v mechanically-minded![8|]
Look forward to hearing from you

Jeddie

Hi Jeddie,

Like you I am also not mechanically-minded so other than the hole in my pocket I couldn't tell you what exactly was involved.
I bought the 'kit' from type 911 £32 + vat (see http://www.type911.co.uk/images/performance/930ssk.jpg ) for image. Got it fitted at my local specialist at the same time as a service & 1bar boost spring - which I'd also recommend. An instant 30hp gain for approx £50) Wish I had got it done ages ago as it's much nicer now.
From the 'hot seat' things don't look any different to standard.

Rgds,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
Just looked at the jpg you suggested and guess what?? I'm none the bloody wiser!! So, in layman's terms is there a shorter distance between gears as far as the gear lever travel is concerned? I bought the car from a friend of mine and he actually had the boost taken down a bit FROM 1 bar. This was the advice of Chapelgates who told him it would be more likely to blow under this increased pressure. In fact on a trip to Monza a couple of years ago this very thing happened to a guy with a 930 with 1 bar pressure and he had to leave the car with a Swiss Porsche garage to have the work done! Not the cheapest country to break down in. How long since you've had yours increased? Have you heard such reports?
I have got the LE exhaust system so mine is at 330 bhp. what does your beast produce at mo?

Regards

Jeddie

Some years ago had an original '77 ,3 0 litre turbo ,with 'boost' spring no intercooler ludicrous bar ..........i am not going to write it down you would just laugh or disbeleive it,[car had full 3 .3 interior from new, with boost gauge] drove to London and back commuting not many track days then blew it up after 213 000 miles .................just depends how you look after it and what state its in when you start modifying..........currently have 525 bhp;750nm out of 993 GT2 all done with extreme care in Germany .................only blew it up when i put in wrong gear at Eau Rouge [well worn tale pse dont ask] Same principal thought out in advance and executed correctly, believe it or not i dont believe in mucking about with Dr P turns out but it can be fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Jeddie,

Indeed, yes there is a shorter movement between gears now, which is most pleasing and makes it that much more pleasurable to drive. Regarding the boost the advise I recieved was that the engine is good for 1bar but to run more than that would require a larger intercooler etc...

I don't 'hack' around in it (much) so touch wood I won't be that unfortunate. I have been running with 1bar for nearly a year now with no ill effects. The combination of that and the 'short shift' make for an even bigger smile than normal.

After the boost spring it was producing 327.8 at the flywheel, 279 at the rear wheels. I have since then had the ninemiester header system (website says 40bhp + big torque gains), an intercooler & a larger turbo fitted. Next trip to the road should be interesting. Hoping for something close to 400.

Rgds,
Andrew

Any track day i am at pse come over pleased to give the odd ride A911 P GT in Audi rs blue [from factory] it is fairly quick ,one of the cup car champions got a bit of a surprise at Snetterton end of last year but then he could go faster round corners !

Thanks for the offer Vic.

Can't say I've been tempted to try my hands - or the car for that matter - round a track. Not just yet anyhow!

Its very safe and great way to explore the car without problems ,just come and try it WARNING you will be hooked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Andrew,
I must say that the shorter gear shift is of great interest as I have always felt that is something I would like to improve about the car. Can you remember what sort of cost was involved?
As regards track days, I must agree with Vic, they are great fun and certainly safe. However, one thing to be aware of is that some tracks have noise limits, certainly my local ones Castle Combe and Goodwood, and if you have made all these modifications especially to the exhaust system, you might have a problem wwith your car being too "noisy".
I don't know about other tracks, but I'm sure if you posted which were your local tracks, someone would be able to advise you about specific noise restrictions.

Jeddie

Jeddie,

I bought the 'kit' from type 911 £32 + vat. Had it fitted at the same time as the wastegate spring and a service so the cost was lost in with that lot.

I think it would be no more than a 2hr job though...
