911 wanted

Dear All

I am about to take the sports car plunge! Was intending to buy a 20v Audi Ur-Quattro (stop laughing at the back!). But it has come to my attention that 911's are cheaper than expected.

I have found a couple of Quattro enthusiasts that know just about anything you need to know when buying (and running) one of these old timers. There must be the same with the 911.

There is a current car advertised for £14k. It looks like, what I would call an SC Targa in the picture. It is in fact a Carrera4. It has most of the bells and whistles on it, but like the Quattro, will need an expert to do a full assessment, I can tell if your average motor is in fine fettle but I know that this will need an expert. Who do I need to speak to. The car is not far from W. London. You guys out there will be able to keep me shiny side up, this is dangerous territory that I am in.

Of course, if you know of a car that is relatively original, please get in touch immediately. I have about £12,000 to play with.

Thanks for any help you can proffer.

George,

For it to be a Carrera4...it would be a later 964 model, this would not have the pre impact front/rear bumpers and bellows arrangement (like mine in the picture) but would have a complete front and rear apron....becareful though, it is possible fit an SC or Carrera with a 964 body kit and try and pass it off as a much later model....earliest Carrera 4 models commenced in 1989...one of the biggest changes fron the older type of Carrera and SC is the suspension, changing from torsion bars to coil springs.....have a look to first suss if you are being conned here....I dont have the sequence of chassis numbers that would identify such a car for you but if you asked on the 964 forum, I'm sure they would be able to help....Let us know how you get on ...and dont jump in until your are sure...I have to say on first impression £14,000 is cheap for a 964 if RHD.

Good luck..

Hi George

SCs finished in '83, from there until '86 it was non-G50 gearboxed 3.2 Carreras and then '87 -'89 was G50 gearboxed 3.2 Carreras.

From '89 - '93 it was the 964 which was the first 911 with ABS and power steering, AC came later. Also the 964 was the first 911 with 4 wheel drive hence the option of a Carrera 2 or Carrera 4.

I spent much time investigating the various 911s before I bought and I was very tempted with the extra fruit on a 964 but be cautious. You will notice that 964s, especially early ones are cheaper than 3.2 Carreras and for good reason. There were many problems with these cars including failing flywheels (many of which are now replaced - when the clutch was done) and oil leaks. The addition of the ABS and power steering changed the car so much that all of the development history that created such a sturdy car in the 3.2 Carrera was to some degree lost.

If you can do the work yourself or you are happy to spend the money on maintaining a 964 then fine, but if you have limited funds and want a virtually bulletproof car, then go for a late and well documanted 3.2 Carrera - the lack of power steering and ABS that worried me so much has turned out to be no problem at all - in fact I now wonder why I valued them so much in previous cars.
