911SC Electrical failures

Hi I have just bought a 79 SC which has run wonderfully for the last 4k miles - then some nasty failures that i'm now grappling with any help appreciated:-

1. Electronic speedo not working (i suspect the sensor as per Haynes manual diagnostic - is this a common failure?)
2. Front fogs not working (rears working & bulbs okay) i think likely to be the 2 position switch - if so how on earth do i get at it ? reaching under the dash there appears to be a solid panle in the way!
3. Headlights working on dipped beam only & the headlight switch on the LH stalk is totally ineffectual could this be the switch itself within the steering column?

No fuses appear to be blown as i've checked all with a DMM - Is it likely that a relay might be causing these problems or am i just unlucky with a systems failure?

thanks in advance
Tim

I know how to check the speedo sender if you are handy with a meter, PPM or email me. They do fail from time to time . If it turns out to be the clock let me know I will have a good one for sale very soon.
Can't help with the fog light issue.
The indicator stalk is a common failure on SCs and other 911s just replace it and your headlights will be fine, you could try taking it out and cleaning the contacts but very often the contacts for the main beam are totally burnt out.

Have you checked the fuse holders? My 1981 car failed to start due it emerged to the fuse holders being dirty/corroded and thus not passing enough current to operatethe relay serving the fuel pump. If you had the same problem with the fuse serving another relay that could be the problem with the lights.

Easy solution and good maintenance tip is to clean contacts then spray lightly with WD40

I think you will find that WD40 is actually an insulator and a poor conductor. If you were going to spray anything then electrical contact spray would be the one to buy.

certainly is; which is why if sprayed over the fuse and contacts when the fuse is in place the connections between the two are protected. Of course they need to be clean first and certainly using a contacts cleaner when the fuse is out is sensible.

Guys,

Thanks for you suggestions after a busy weekend i have managed to fix everything except the speedo which i will have another go at this coming weekend.

Cheers
Tim
