did the region 9/OPC Sutton Coldfield charity treasure hunt at the week-end which finished at Coventry Transport Museum. we were honored to be allowed to park on the millenium clock (hope i didn't drop oil)
who ever managed to organise that is my hero, this is what being a member of PCGB is all about(for me) being allowed access to places not otherwise acessable.

well its BRIGHT ORANGE so is quite easy to find [:D][:D][:D]

but seriously....

appart from once using the brake padel as a clutch [:-][] i really love this pretty little car. its not the quietist or fastest but it makes up for that with being stupidly easy to drive (even for me)

FAB, great choice Helen and I love the colour. If I ever finish my project, I'd be very tempted to respray it in exactly that orange. If you ever get any problems with the 'sporto' side of things contact myself or Peter Cook.

whos the best person to take a sportomatic to ? im convinced this car isn't running as well as it should be, it is also dripping (slightly) oil.

also do you know where i can get a copy (a photocopy would do) of a owners manual for this car. ?

Just DON'T do the classic mistake of shifting into what you think is second - only to find you're in reverse - other than that the Sporto is pretty bullet proof :)

I know some people don't get on with him - but Robert Gant at Gantspeed has always made my little Sporto hum - but brace yourself for the invoice [:D]

Have you tried looking on eBay for a 1970 model year manual? They were in reprint a while ago. Try an OPC?

An OPC might source an owners manual for you or better still give Peter Cook a ring he might be able to get one photocopied. I Have the workshop manual on CD which I think you can download now from Porsche, there is a small section on the sportomatic side of things in there, if you need a copy I can send it. When you say it is not running right what do you mean exactly? Are you near Francis Tuthill , he is very good but other than that I can't recommend anyone in your neck of the woods.

i might be being over sensative here but to my ears the engine just dosn't sound as smooth as it should, and sounds like its " racing"(too higher revs) a bit, but, having never been in another sportomatic i don't know whats Normal.

happy to travel if there is a sportomatic guru in the land

Helen - the Sporto has a viscous coupling so it needs to be 'wound up' to get going - hence to get it moving you tend to use higher revs until you've reached momentum.

Bear in mind that it will be very different from the '12 with two extra cylinders and a bit more weight [:D]

I'll see if I can go down via yours on my way to Heathrow if you want? I've owned my Sporto for eight years and been through the learning curve [8|]

Helen, just think of the sporto as being like any other 911 but with a different transmission, if the engine is idling a little fast or not running smoothly then it is unlikely to be anything to do with the sporto side of things. The sporto idles about 50/100rpm higher than a manual but it shouldn't race. Your car runs on carbs so perhaps it just needs a little tune on the carbs, make sure the timing is spot on and points and distributor are in good condition too. There is a valve on the sportos to control the speed at which the clutch fully engages, at one extreme you get instant lock up on the move when gear changing but this will give a clunk when putting the car into gear at idle (it's the way I like mine to be, I just use a few revs as I put the car in gear from standstill to smooth the action of the clutch. At the other extreme stationery gear shifts are very smooth and 'clunkless' but the clutch slips a little under load when on the move, it may not be so noticeable on your engine as it has so little torque compared to mine). You can adjust the valve to be set according to the driving style you prefer. There is a website for sporto owners called
Sportomatic Owners
if you haven't already spotted it, there is a 1970 owners manual online. There are few people left who really know these cars, Berny Tester is an expert but he is over in Stowmarket , miles from you, if you ring him he might know someone near you but I don't I'm afraid but I doubt you have a problem there by the sound of things , just get a good Independent Porsche Garage to give it a service.

Helen,

Daft question - have you got the hand throttle all the way down? Just thinking about it your '12 wouldn't have had one - it should be the lever to the left of the handbrake - use it to start her and warm her up - then when warm, push the handle all the way down.

Just a thought [;)]

[&:]i may be blonde but its all from a bottle [:'(]
