915 vs G50

hello all, can u tell me the major differences between these gear boxes please. i know the later 3.2's tended too come with the G50 but i once had an 87 930 turbo with just 4 gears and im assuming that was a 915 box. i see people seem to prefer the G50 but im not sure why?? Also whats to look out for on a 915 setup

I believe G50 is hydraulic and the 915 cable - early 3.2 had the 915.

The 930 has a 930 specification 4 speed gearbox which was for m/year 1989, so that's from sep 88 onwards, reconfigured into a 5 speed it it is *not* the same gearbox as the normally aspirated cars.

For me personally, I like a good condition, nicely set up 915 box. I don't like a short shift kit for it as it lures you into feeling that you have a rapid shift modern box and therefore you might slam in the gears.
A g50 is more idiot proof in that respect, to coin a phrase.
Finally, the best improvement by far was to fit a WEVO shifter to my 915 box: I my god, the development shift Porsche never implemented.

Most common method seems to be following:
Free flow exhaust system, SSI's or similar
K&N air filter with air box mod or similar
Steve Wong chip (re-map) or similar
 
Thanks I'll read this now. I'm talking to someone about an 87 yr car later today that I'm assuming has a 915 so
I wanted some ideas. Not sure what the WEVO shifter is Bert and what it would cost?? I'll know more details later today. Tks again for help
 
Cheers. Steve Wong chip easy to fit? What difference it make to performance? Remap better option?? Wasn't 87 the crossover year for 915/g50?
 
I've driven 3.2 Carreras with 915 and G50 boxes, clutch definitely better and lighter on the G50 with th change gate as I remember being wider with a shorter throw fore/aft '86 was the change over year according to the calendar so G50 probably came in as the '87 model year.

I did once drive a LHD Carrera with a 915 overnight from Derby to Paris and found the driving position more comfortable as instead of the pedals being to the left as in the RHD they were straight ahead, also as the gearchange seemed angled slightly to the right in 1, 3 & 5 or felt that way it felt better.
 
Ok so the update-
Turns out last year the car was crashed and the font end replaced ( owner does know if it was ct d or c) but apparently repaired to a high standard and repairs detailed. The upshot is that the car has no usual rust issues due to the repairs being done to the front end. The current owner has made cosmetic upgrades to the car and it looks brilliant in the photos and the current owner clearly cares for the car. It's done 144k miles and though there is no invoices for a top end rebuild there has been some top end work carried out fairly recently I'm told. Its an 87 G50 and the owners looking for 14.5k.

David, you are right, the car looks beautiful in the photo's (except perhaps for the poor set of the luggage compt. lid - it's slightly raised at the front...) but please do NOT be swayed by the glossy pictures. If the front end has been replaced, it's had a fair whack so there will have been collateral damage. Has this all been attended to? You say there will be no rust issues as a result of the front end repair? What about the "B" posts, the kidney bowls, the rear window surround, the "A" pillar to cowl joint, the rear bumper etc., etc., the list of potential pitfalls goes on. Has the car got a full service history with main dealers or reputable indy's? I would expect this and more for a 144,000 miler WITHOUT the previous accident damage.

I'm not saying the seller isn't being genuine, or that the car isn't potentially worth the money (though I think it is steep), I'm just suggesting you should go in with both eyes WIDE open. There are plenty of good 3.2's out there for that money.
 
All fair points Chris. He's sending me more details of the repairs so I'll investigate further. I'm looking for something a little dufferent to add to the 993 [:(]
The 930 turbo DES bought recently was an interesting car for example
