924/944 Buying Advise

Further to my recent post "Is a 944 the best buy???" I am now pretty much in a position to buy, however I have lowered my budget, now looking at around £3k. 2.5/2.7????

So can anyone offer me any advise on buying one of the above what to look for and what to avoid, also which is the best engine to go for? I am keen on doing some trackdays and may prepare the car for this over time ie Roll Cage, suspension etc.....

I am budgeting myself to around £3k (for the car) so that I can keep some of the equity I have gained from my Boxster to spend on my house!

I am considering a 924 also, I have seen a few 924S's recently for sale there is one I am keen on with low miles etc. But until I get my money for the my Boxster I can't make the move! (hopefully the Boxster will go tomorrow!)

I used to own a 1986 924S with the 160BHP engine & can confirm everything Andrew has said. Great cars fun to drive & economical, the only downside I can think of is that they have the older Pod dash rather than the sleeker Oval dash you would get in a post 85.5 944. I would certainly buy one again as a daily driver.

Did the 924S have a power increase at any time or was it always 160bhp?

Early ones were 150bhp, legend has it they were detuned so as not to be faster than the more expensive 944.

Think if it was just 1988 ones that were 160bhp.

The power increase was IIRC from late mid 86 on till the end of production. I'm sure someone else will be able to be more specific with engine Nos. etc.

Right then, according to Peter Morgan's book;

Sep 86 - 150bhp (9.7:1 compression ratio), rhd introduced
Aug 87 - uprated to 160bhp (10.2:1 compression ratio)
Jun 88 - 924S discontinued
