924 and 924S tinted windscreens.

Having bought a copy of Mike Cotton's book "Porsche 924, 944 & 968. A Collectors Guide" (via Amazon, a brand new copy sent all the way from Malmo in Sweden by an American company based in Tennessee for p/p inclusive price of just £6.70 ! ! ) ..... I am left wondering again at the accuracy of some of these books. He says the 924 has a VW engine and I thought it was Audi 100 based. He gives weight distribution as 53:47 front to rear, whereas I have read several references saying it is 48:52.

Anyways up, can someone tell me for certain :-
By 1988 did all 924S models have a top-tinted windscreen as standard - or was it still an option ?

I suppose the definitive answer is to find someone with an '88 sales brochure in their collection ?

The engine started off as a OHV Audi unit and during one of it's manifestations it was used in the VW LD van.
It shgould be noted that by the time it arrived in your 924 it had undergone many changes. The sump was different as were the pistons, cams and crankshaft. When it was used in the 924 Turbo, all that remained was the cylinder block.

Histoical note. The engine in my Lotus Elan (Lotus Twin Cam) and in my Racing Ginetta G4 (Cosworth DFC)were both Ford Cortina engines.... Yeah right.

All options may not have been fitted as many of the parts in a 924S are the same as a 944 which went on to be made for quite a bit longer. So Porsche wouldn't have been looking to use all the bits up.

Cheers,

Interesting engine - the so-called "twin-cam" - in fact it had three camshafts [;)]

New to 924 ownership I prefer to tell my car nutter friends that it has an VW LT (LD??) engine - there is a nice inverted snobbery in it.

As for previous lives - when I had a Lancia Beta Monte Carlo (at 6' 5" you can imagine the humour) and then an Integrate I used to say it had a Strada engine.
