924 caliper refurb

Can anyone advise as to the reason for the small step on the pad contact face of the caliper piston and what is the orientation angle of that step to the pad location face on the caliper?
I can't find any reference to the piston orientation in any of my docs on the 924 although I remember some mention of it in an old 944 Haynes manual.

In the Haynes 924 manual it shows the 'cutout' on the piston, page 208 12.16

In the Haynes 944 manual it shows the 'cutout' on the piston, page 152 4.20
Also in the 944 manual it is shown on page 148 3.4a

If you haven't got a Haynes - then taking the centreline as being through the frame lugs, the cutout is placed across the bottom lug, the top lug being the end that has the bleed screw.

muddy,
Greetings.
Thanks once again for for the information.
I haven't yet tried your 'hot/cold' suggestion on the sticking bolt problem but will attempt it on completion of the front brake refurb.
Regards

The 944 manual shows a 20 degree incline from horizontal for the cutout part, but I can't remember from which direction.
Of course, I found this about a month after refurbing all four of my 944 calipers...

Paul.
That's a bit odd. Which issue are you looking at?
Mine is a 1990 copy - Printed in the USA by Haynes North America. In that the photo on page 152 shows the cutout at right-angles to the centreline.
