924 dials into 944?

Is it possible to take out my yellow/black coloured dials (systems/speedo/rev counter and the three smaller ones) on my '84 944 Lux and replace them with the white/orange/black ones from a 924...? I've never cared for the ones that I have: too garish and they don't go with the burgundy exterior/black pinstripe interior. I've seen a photo of a set and they look similar. Thanks.

Don't know. Not something I've heared of anyone doing previously but I wouldn't think they should be different.

Try one and see.

IIRC Porsche said at the time of the 944's launch that the instrument markings were changed from white to yellow for 'easier reading' [&:] . Personally I find the 924's instruments just about perfect and I'm not sure I'd like yellow markings at all (they also make the dash look more dated to my eyes) so I can understand why you might want to change them.

I think I have a full spare set of 924 dials/gauges; drop me an email if you'd like some pics / more info.

Cheers
Dan

This is not a straight swap. The 944 has an economy gauge in the rev counter which the 924 rev counter doesn't, and you would have to swap over the handbrake/ brake-other failure warning from the centre console as I beleive the 944 has an extra feature, possibly unfastened seat belt warning.

Thanks to both of you for your reply. I think I can live without the economy gauge as it is next to useless anyway. As for the unfastened seatbelt warning this seems to have a life of its own in my car anyway -- plus, I was only planning on replacing the three gauges not the entire centre console -- is this possible?

I really dont know, but something that similar ought to be interchangeable. Look out for two small screws under the heater sliders which need to be removed so that this panel can be withdrawn, which in turn enables the bottom of the gauge panel to be unclipped from its slots after having removed the two screws. The lead for the warning panel is quite short usually, and watch out for the lamp in the right hand side of the heater panel. The wiring loom has a plug on it so you can take the panel right out, and remove the gauges in comfort.

And don't get the bulbs mixed up as I did.....

Now the clock stays bright and and the heater lights dim with the volts and oil pressure clock[:)]

My economy gauge does not work and the seatbelt light has a mind of its own.

I think the clocks would exchange.

Did the 924 turbo have bright green dial numbers? I would like some of those to match my mint green paintwork and green pinstripe seats.

My 924S has the orange text and a seat-belt warning lamp so I suspect a later 924 would be just what you need as a donor. Would have thought they'd swap straight over. (and no. I don't want to swap mine [;)])

I don't look in the 944 section much. The 924 rev counter moves clockwise as the revs increase. 950 rpm is about 4 o'clock and 6200 (if you wish to rev the n/a engine that high) is just past 10 o'clock. Approximately, without going outside at two in the morning to look.

Regarding the green markings, I am led to believe that series one turbos were green, but the series two has white markings.
