Cheers,
Colin.
Thanks for the offer i have just been and got 1 ,but it hasn't solved the problem, the ignition lights are all on as is the fuel pump so it has me stumped.ORIGINAL: VITESSE
I replaced the distributor on our 924 Lux many years ago because of lack of sparks-it was thought that the Hall effect trigger unit had failed-the new dizzie solved the problem-however I still have the old unit which otherwise is in very good condition-I have never investigated whether it could be repaired-you are welcome to have it for £10 & postage or pick it up from Formby.
Cheers,
Colin.
Does arm spin without the cap on when the engine turns over?
it sure does, but its not the problem,i've eliminated that. the system is shorting out,for example, when you switch the ignition on and take the minus wire off the coil and touch the minus termial with the wire it sparks ,and thats without turning the engine over and also with the control box removed,so there has to be a short cos its draining the batteryORIGINAL: A9XXC

Replacement from Design 911 is about £80 delivered.
This is what mine looked like. It still charged and started. Only found it 'cos the starter was lazy and when I went to change it the wiring fell away!
The 944s have the engine wiring out of the way for the most part - except the oil pressure ones and these are a regular problem, cracking etc
Mike
yes i was starting to think along those lines,as i'd checked or replaced any relevent unit but to no avail.as for buying it ,i am fortunate to have one car i stripped for spares and one other i am about to start restoring, when the humor hits me that is.ORIGINAL: snaggletooth
You should check your wiring between the battery/starter/alternator. These wires can get very hot, melt, crumble and cause all sorts of problems.

Somewhere in Pelican Parts website there is a wiring diagram for the 924 but I am not sure if it covers the model with the box behind the left headlight. From my experience the distributor is very reliable as it has no wearing parts. Check you are getting 12v to the coil. This is at the terminal marked 15. If there is no voltage there then check the supply fuse.
thanks to all for taking the time to give me advice.ORIGINAL: 924nutter
There is an obvious way to rule out the distributor. Remove the coil feed leed, often referred to as the king lead, and push any one of the plug leads in the vacated hole. Fit a plug and turn the engine over, if you get a spark then the conclusion is the distributor is at fault.

i have now found the source of the problem and when i tell you,you wont believe it.
but first i will explain how it occured,i needed to fit a new speedo cable, after having broke 3 previous cables shortly after fitting ,due to the angle of the fitment,i found the 3 i fitted were all kinked in the same place,so i decided to change the rpm and speedo around,i'm surprised i didn't kop it sooner.
as the 3 terminals on the rpm have male connectors fitting the naked female to them caused it to short out on the steel housing at back resulting in the wire connected to the coil shorting out, hence no current going to the distributer.
so i pulled the rpm clock out and put insulation tape around each terminal ,and hey presto instant ignition.
i new it had to be a simple problem.
so if you intend swopping around be sure to insulate the terminals.
Mike
its fairly straight forward ,the speedo cable is just long enough to enable you to swop around,as are the wires for tacho and clock lights.ORIGINAL: A9XXC
Great you found the problem, however I like the idea of swapping the clocks. Did you have any other problems swapping them - my 83 944 should be the same and I dont like the kink in the speedo cable either.
Mike
i actually forgot was only on reflection after that i realised it may be the tacho wires, but i felt why would a live wire be unsealed.ORIGINAL: 924nutter
Well Batavus you might have mentioned that from the outset.
still don't know why ?
