924 Found in Mayo .. Expert Needed

Hi Guys
Heres a 924 which I would love you boys to cast your expert eyes over. A chance meeting with a fellow (Kevin) at a show unearthed this machine... The first time I saw it it was covered in haybales......[] The story on the car is sketchy to say the least. Kevin is a farmer in Co.Mayo with an interest in Classic Cars. A fellow he knew worked in England for years. He made a bit of money and brought this machine back with him about 1991 or 1992. He went back to work again and left the 924 in his brothers shed for a load of years. He then told his brother to "sell it off" as he fell on hard times. His brother sold the car to a crowd of young fellows who were going to "Trash it". Fortunately they were not successful in getting it going and made a mess of the wiring. Kevin got wind of this and got the car in a sorry state in 2001. Kevin lost interest and left it buried in his shed until he met me at a show. I had my 944 with me. Kevin unearthed the 924 and we attempted to get it going. It was fitted with points but I made the decision to fit it with the electronic ignition from an 81. It now purrs like a pussy cat[;)]. There is still a load of work to do to it to get it road worthy.
What I can gather from the sketchy history is ... it is a 1978 with the optional Getrag 5sp box. It was originally Guards Red.
Some barsteward fitted it with a glass sunroof in the early '80s[][]
I think it has the clocks off a turbo as the speedo reads up to 150 mph and it also has a turbo warning light under the oil light
The conversion to a Carrera GT lookalike took place about '85 with the fitting of the body kit
All the interior has been recovered and it says 'Carrera' on the seats. I am certain that it is NOT a Carrera interior[;)]
Sorry for the length of this post guys heres some pictures

So there you go .. a web of interegue...... Her chassis no is 9248107*** if that is any thing to do with it..... Do you remember this car....? Did you own this car...? Did you convert this car...? Were you the person responsible for the sunroof [][]
I would love if any of you boys could shed some light ... Thanks in advance[;)]

I thought it was red in the shed.... [:D][:D]

Previous owner must have been Barbie [:D]

I know its in a sorry state at the moment but it deserves a chance even though its a Lilac colour with a Pink interior [&:]

For sure .. She is in the recovery bay at the minute... I have to sort lights and wipers and a few other bits and pieces... The underbonnet fan isnt going..! No wild problems.... She could have been lost forever and admittedly she is not to everones taste - including mine but she is worth saving... Even as a quirky runabout. Why somebody went and tarted up a Guards Red 1978 924 is beyond me [:'(]

A quick question for the anoraks .The indicator stalk is knackered..... The indicator and wiper stalks seem to be off a 1302 Beetle if I am not mistaken.... I always seen 924s with Golf like stalks.... Is this correct...?

Thanks a lot muddy...! They are indeed stalks off a 1302 Beetle.... Apart from the winscreen washer which is only a manual pump while in the 924 its a switch to run the pump....! [;)]

Just to keep yous up dated.
The tail light bulbholders were all corroded so they have now been cleaned up and now work fine.
The underbonnet fan had a duff connection where someone had put in a scotchlok connector [][]
The headlights were only working on main beam on the passenger side. This was due to corrosion in the fusebox on fuses 1 to 4. All sorted out now.
Next Jobs:
Indicators - Light on in dash but no flashing. none of the outside ones work. The hazards dont work either
Auxillary driving lights have to be sorted out.
Reversing lights - Could be a switch problem...!

Ahhhh the joys of working on a 30 year old 924 which has been laid up for 5 years [:'(][:'(]

Glad thats over the water, the missus has just said "oh is that for sale, I'd have it"
Now while I enjoy her coming along to shows, I don't think I could take having one that colour along side me [:D]

Good look with the resto though, it'll certainly turn some heads!!

[:D][:D][:D] Well actually it belonged to a lady in London at a stage who got the kit put on and the paint job......!!!! Women.....[:'(][:'(]

After sorting the lights/indicators/brakelights and wipers over the last few weeks we decided we would take a little run in her to see what she drove like.... Kevin eased her out of the shed and I got in....! It looks really menacing from behind as it sits on 245/70 x 14 tyres....! We took her through the village of Aghmore. We stopped to check on stuff after about a mile... The brakes were not sticking or anything. She drives really well.. No rattles, shakes or gearbox whine.... We met a crowd of young lads in a souped up Toyota Starlet and they nearly crashed looking at it...[:D]. We took her about 5 easy miles and she really wants to see the road again.

I have a few minor issues with the fuse box due to bad connections mainly. If the fuse box is left hanging everything works fine but if you put it back in to its place the indicators and the headlight raising mechanism stop. [] Next Monday will see me removing the box altogether and sorting any remaining corrosion and bad connections. I see a few "Scotchlock" connectors which I am going to take out and solder the joints properly.

Kevin is getting the car cleared on to a "ZV" plate which applies to 30+ year old cars .. This takes only €50 and tax is €40 so that has to be sorted before the she gets the big reveal on Easter Sunday... at a Classic road run in Mayo.....[;)]

I'll keep you all posted...!

Interested to hear that the Republic tax concession is set at 30 years. Is it a 'rolling' date or fixed?

Our current Labour 'politicians' (for which substitute > self-serving fiddlers of expenses and allowances) have refused to budge on the 1972 fixed date in order to rake in more money for their huge pensions and for donating to the Swiss bank accounts of African 'leaders'.

Irish number plates have always intrigued me. In West Cork on one of many holidays, I remember seeing a decaying Austin Cambridge lodged in a roadside ditch. Its registration was RIP 313.
Have ended up with a County Down plate on my everyday car.
a) It was free - as a friend was scrapping the donor car.
b) Not my initials .... (too "Footballers Wives" for me)
c) I simply like Irish plates. Just wish I could have afforded Z 1 which I was once offered when on holiday in Cork.

I remember a 1982 Ascona (Cavalier) rotting in a field close to me with VIC 777 as the reg....! Once a car gets an Irish reg thats it until the car is scrapped. The plate is for life... The reg RIP 313 had to go with the car unfortunately. A friend of mine got his S2000 Honda in the UK and got it cleared into this country as 99-MO-52000..... He knew somebody who worked in the tax office but it was a lot of hassle... Kevin was looking for 78-MO-924 but couldnt get it ... so its ZV.....!

The 30 year thing goes on the date of first registration in the country of origin so the 924 was first registered Feb '78 so we are safe enough... The VRT here is a joke... its 25-30% of the value of the vehicle in this country. The VRT office is based in Rosslare port. This "Open Market Value" is determined by the office themselves and is not related to the cars condition. For example them barstewards in Rosslare look to see how many cars are coming in and which type... The popular ones like Honda Civic's,BMW's and the like have very high "Open Market Value" so a '97 Civic that you buy for £700 on eBay will cost you about €1250 to VRT because them blaggards have the "Open Market Value" as an unbelievable €3600 ...! Well I done all this and to my dismay it didnt improve at all. The headlight raising and lowering is now okay but the indicators are still the same[] I put on the hazards and they worked no problem until I lifted the fuseboard to put it back in again.... The barsteward.....[:(] I put a testlamp into the pins of the flasher relay on Pin 49 for 12v and Pin 31 for ground. This was to see where the failure was occuring and at what point. The 12v remained even though the indicators were stopped. I am convinced that the break in the wire is on the wire which is fed off 49a on the flasher relay.

It has been suggested that the loom has hardened after 30years and the wiring has become brittle.... The break is definately close to the fuse board so I am going to replace plug E and as much loom as I can cut from my 1981 to see if I can sort this issue out. [:'(][:'(]

We had an Agony phase - an Ecstasy phase and now - its Agony again... as I have to lie under the dash, solder upside down and get a light head as I emerge from the car.... [&:].

Later washer stalks on 1303 beetles ran an electric pump - so it is straight of a same year Beetle.

Wash your mouth out to even suggest that [:D][:D]

Seriously though this car is driving me around the bend literally....[] I am seriously disillusioned at the minute. I put the fuse board back into the bracket and the usual happened with the indicators. I run a wire from 49a up to the hazard light switch and it ran fine. I got called away after that. I am thinking of going against best practice and mount the flasher unit under the dash in the drivers side.. This will I hope sort out the indicators once and for all.

The electrical jobs left are ...
(1) Indicators (we all know about)
(2) Additional driving lights (Stopped as well with the fuse box mounted)[:'(]
(3) Rear wiper (would be nice)
(4) Radio (easy job)
(5) Heated Rear window (would be nice)

My list of jobs left now is getting smaller eventually...... Kevin has a bit of bodywork to sort out and tyres to get...! Its hard to get 245/70 x 14 rears and 225/70 x 14 fronts...!

We have had to leave off the big reveal due to other commitments. I am aiming for the end of this month [;)]

Are any of you fellas coming over for the Wesport Tour 25-30 May......?
