924 - misfiring at cold

my 1984 2.0 924 has recently developed a cold start problem and doesn't fire on all cylinders until warm. initial thoughts are to look at plugs/points, however, before parting with £££'s unnecessarily, has anyone else experienced a similiar problem leading to a different solution?

also, both nearside and offside electric windows have totally given up the ghost - don't respond at all even when the car is running.

Mmm - me hates the winter!

I found that my 1984 924 LUX did decided that it would'nt fire on all cylinders when i started her up yesterday but seems fine today. might just happen when its very cold? sorry i can't really help

Yeah i hate winter too[]

Seen my post "window lift switches" They will need a good clean, Your cold start could be the warm up value with a bit of dirt in it!.

Have you read the 924 FAQs? this is a classic FAQ.

Yes, I have, and it appears to be more relevant to stalling problem, whereby my question relates to misfiring - the car us not stalling, it is simply not firing on all cylinders when cold. The car also seems to want to 'pop' (although it hasn't yet developed into a full on back fire) and I have now noticed that quite a bit of exhaust is being generated (the exhaust issue is not related to a head gasket issue though as that was checked very recently and is 100% okay).

I'm hoping it's just a plugs and points issue and I will check this out within the next few days. I thought i'd post the question incase anyone who has actually experienced the same problem, found a solution other than what I feel may be the cause as I do not have money to burn. I am not a mechanic to any degree and as such will need to further investigate the suggestion that the cause of the problems could be the 'warm up valve'.

Thanks anyway.

Thanks. I've just found a link which describes where this is located (for the benefit of anyone like myself who has lost their Haynes manual or simply doesn't know!);

924 Garage

Scroll to the paragraph titled:
Where is the warm-up regulator/control pressure regulator located?

There's also quite a comprehensive section about cold start problem, along with a bunch of other stuff that may prove helpful to anyone investigating 924 issues. This is the American 924 register site, so I guess our Euro models could differ in some respects??

I've just been searching through the American 924 register site, and found someone who descrobed pretty much the same problem. Again, for the benefit of anyone referring here who may have a similiar problem, here are the details of what the owner said resolved their problem:

After a half day at work today (Sat 16 Nov), I came home and decided to work on the car.
It was misfiring a lot, and when driving it felt like it was running on 3 cylinders.
It could have been anything, but I decided to change the HT leads, Distributor cap, and rotor.
A difficult run up to the nearest Halfords. £10 for the cap and arm, but no leads"¦ oh well.
I fitted the rotor and cap in the parking lot. What a difference!!!! Yay, my car works.
I am so chuffed because I fixed it for £10!!!

The idling is meant to be 950+-50, but it was 1200.
It was set when I had a pokey injector (which I replaced, easy job), and the poor sparking.
I reset the idling at home (didn't adjust the mix, this will be done next week, at a garage with a gas meter). I took it out for a long drive, what a pleasure!!!

Whats surprising is the garage that did my fuel pumps and starter didnt pick this up.

Right then, i'm off to Halfords!!

Don't know if you've had any joy solving this problem yet, but as another possibility to consider, replacing the injector seals on my 924 helped significantly.

Hi Dan,
Yes, i meant to post an update which may prove useful to anyone else.
The problem has been retified. The cause.......a lose spark plug!

I couldn't get to until I got the right tools as access to the spark plugs is awkward otherwise.
I needed a 3/8" drive, 13/16 spark plug socket, 3/8" rachet.
Replaced all with Bosch Super 4 WR56 Plugs.

Worked a treat. No exessive exhaust anymore, idles much better, and purs like a cat - all for just 1 spark plug. obvious really! Also replaced dist cap, and rotor arm for a few quid from halfords (Rotor = part HRA500 / dist cap HRC500).
