924 newbie seeks buying advice

Hi front engine lovers. I am looking for a 924 2.0 to share garage space with my Boxster. I will use the car for club events and the occasional historic regularity rally.
What pitfalls should I look out for when buying and are any models better than others. I need something no later than 1985 to be eligible for historic rallies.
If I choose a car with a sunroof can I still fit a roll cage? Are sump guards available?
I know it is within the regs but that doesn't help if nobody makes them.

I am at the thinking and looking stage.
Thanks
Graham

Hello Graham, good to see you are after a 924.
I suppose the first question should be are you after a normally aspirated model or a Turbo?

Hi Graham, you should have a look at the 924 Register site here on the Forum, Paul has put a lot of info about the cars and you will find it a help. I bought my 1983 924 just over a year ago and found that the underside is very important to check. The chassis seems well rust proofed in the late 2.0 litre cars but the fuel pipes, the brake pipes and the petrol tank all seem to rust away and will almost certainly need to be replaced unless already done. Also I find the steering very heavy at slow speeds, probably why the 924S was given power steering. Otherwise I have found the car to be charming to drive, although not a firebrand, it is easy to drive, has superb road holding a good gearbox and is surprisingly comfortable. I use mine almost daily and it has done about 8K miles over twelve months. It could do with a bit more power though and the chassis could handle it easily. Good luck with your search. Robin.

Hi Paul.
Thanks for your reply. I am looking for a N/A car, pre 1985, that my wife and I can use socially and on historic regularity rallies and other navigational stuff. Elaine will be the driver on events.
Since posting my enquiry I have stumbled across a 1980 Le Mans limited edition car which has been laid up for some time, but it is running, and Elaine is comfortable in it. I've put a deposit on it.
It has the right bits and the vin is correct but previous owners have mucked about with the trim so I will have a bit of a search on my hands to source the correct stripes (the vendor has a contact so this might be fairly straightforward) and interior (seats and door cards). Again, the vendor has a stock of all sorts of things for the 924 and its successors, so I will see what I can find.
I will keep you posted on events and will seek to join the Register when I collect the car.

Hi Robin.
Thanks for your message.
I have submitted a fairly detailed reply to Paul's post.
I have seen a car and gone for it.
Let's hope I have not made a disastrous mistake.
We will find out over the coming weeks. Watch this space.
Graham

Interested in your find of a 1980 Le Mans, as I have one myself. I would be interested in the details of the car to add to a small register of this model I am compiling.

Thanks. I will send details when I have the car in my possession. Since my earlier post the vendor has sourced a full set of stripes in Germany (I think werk924.com is the source) and is fitting them ready for when I collect the car. I am undecided concerning the interior. I want to return it to original but I also want seats that will accept full harness belts. I think I will deal with the rear seat more or less immediately and get the fronts retrimmed ready to go back in when I decide to stop using the car on rallies. In the meantime I will fit competition seats and see if I can find some that don't look too extreme.

Sounds interesting, have you satisfied yourself it IS a genuine Le Mans, they are a simple car to replicate visually, to be sure you need to contact Porsche directly for confirmation. Werk924 is probably the only good source for original trim and graphics.

From a purely personal view I think it would be a shame to do anything to detract from originality on an already scarce limited edition, but each to their own of course.
