924 on Lead free petrol

Paul has sent an E-mail to me regarding Lead Free petrol in the 924. I feel that it may be of benefit to answer the question (as far as I can) here.
The main problem with a 924 is not the lead it is the octain level. In theory basic unleaded is not of a high enough (quite) octain but super unleaded is. In America where they have been ' Unleaded' since before the 924 was first produced they have no problem.
We have owned a 924 for over 5 years. It is well into it' s second time round the clock. we have done more than 60,000 of those miles and have never put anything in it except basic unleaded. It has been totally trouble free and I have never been inside the engine. The car is not pampered, lives outside and is used as my wifes daily driver as well as going to Club events and acting as my ' Winter Porsche' .
All of the above reffers only to the 2 litre cars as I have no experience of the ' S' .

Thanks Geoff

I also run my 1983 car on basic unleaded - but often treat it to a drink of 99 octane Shell Optimax - some people notice no difference with this fuel but I do [:)]

So looks like the message is that if you are at all worried about fuel use a higher octane one where possible. (I' m not sure if you CAN get leaded petrol still, can you?)

I will try to find an article I' ve seen somewhere on the subject as well just to make doubly sure. I may even try to have a word with someone at Porsche Cars GB.

(Official mode engaged) Please note that the opinions here on fuel requirements are our own personal experiences of running our own cars and not the views of Porsche Club GB or Porsche Cars GB, we cannot be held responsible for the engine in your car! - (Official mode cancelled)

With vehicles dating from 1976 it' s not easy to speak for the entire run of 2.0 and 2.5 cars on the road especially if the engine has been modified - if anyone has any views or experience on this subject then please post a reply.

[8|]Paul. You can still get propper leaded four star petrol. Log on to the Association of British Drivers website for a list of outlets. I use it on my clssic racing motorcycles but it is very expensive approx £1 per litre.[:-]

Porsche cars had a technical bulletin regarding petrol requirements for all models, I was asked to send a copy to Cornbury house for the records, which I did.so all info should be at the club
I have lost count of the times I have sent out copies of this bulletin to different clubs and individuals, I think TIPEC have a copy on their web site

Thanks Bert, that is just what we' re after [:)] It would be great to have the Official word on the subject.

I' ll see if I can get Cornbury or Geoff [;)] to dig it out and send it to me.

Thanks again.
