If this is going to be your first Porsche then my 2p worth is that unless you are buying an A1 car that you can drive at weekend and take it to an Indy or Porsche garage when it needs work in which case buy the best 944 you can.
If not and you are wanting to get your hands dirty and enjoy being able to say everytime you drive "I did all this then I'll tell you my story and take from it anything that can help with your decision..
Bought my first '24 in 2000, a rather rotten '78 Red 924 n/a, all I knew then was Fords and VW's, drove that car down to Skegness many a time and alla round Scotland, rotten and leaking but tough as old boots, didn't know a good welder back then so sadly it went to China as a cube.
6 years later after learning a lot more about cars and wanting to do it right I did pretty extensive rebuild of an '82 924 n/a over 18 months and learned a lot about the cars, the 2.0l engine may bit a bit lack lustre for a Porsche to the purists, but it'll still put a smile on your face, and its a very, very forgiving and easy car to work on and they're are pretty much bombproof
2 years ago I plucked up the courage to take on a 924S, the perfect stepping stone to a 944, worked on a partial resto there as well learning about the mechanicals along the way already being pretty confident with the rest as they are virtually the same.
4 months I took the plunge and bought my first 944, and I'm not worried about working on any part of it now, depends on your ability and how much you want to do yourself, both great cars in their own right
