924 S engine codes?

Is there any way of making sure a late 924 S has the uprated 160 bhp engine?
I'm looking into swapping my worn 944 engine with one from a 924 S, but I need to make sure that it is the 160 bhp variant.
Thanks in advance.

You need to look at the engine serial number and if it begins 46J followed by five digits then it's a 160bhp engine but if it begins 43G or 43H then it's not.

Excellent, many thanks Martin.

Just as an aside, does anyone know why the late 924 S is rated at 160bhp whereas the 944 2.5 is rated at 163bhp - are they not exactly the same engine?

Peter Morgan, in one of his excellent books, says that the earlier, i.e. pre-1988, 2.5 litre engine was rated at 163bhp but that for the 1988 MY the engine for both the 924S and the 944 was standardised at 160bhp.

As the compression ratio was reduced for the 1988MY from 10.6:1 to 10.2:1 I assume that is the reason for the slight drop in bhp (but being a reader of books and not a dirtier of hands I'm no expert in these things!).

mechanically swap is easyy enoug but the electronic connections for the management system and its sensors are not neccesarily the same and an oval dash 944 has the battery in the boot so the alternator / starter loom is different too.
there are also at least 3 different fuel rails, some can be swapped, some the lines dont reach and check the lenght of thr water rail.some go past the block some dont!
