924 tuning for race car?

I am considering buying a 924 that has been racing in the HSCC 924 series. They are pretty standard engine wise - only run with Piper cam and vernier and seem to be max of 137bhp or thereabouts. I will be racing in the CSSC Future Classics series and there are much less restrictions on engine tuning. Can someone point me to some information about this - doesn't seem to be much about the 4 cylinder engine on the forum, unless I just cant find it.??
As it was a VW engine does anyone know any VW specialists with experience/performance parts for this engine?

There is quite a bit of info on 924board.org.

From what I have seen tuning potential is fairly limited and with cam already done (and presumably an exhaust to match?) the only other real gain is going to be replacing the mechanical fuel injection system with an EFI system - though from what I have read most people who do this spend alot of time getting it to actually run right.

I am lucky that I am still in the early stages of developing my car and thus I have better gains to be had from shedding weight and improving handling before I worry about the engine output (I am more interested in realiability at the mo').

I don't think there is much info about tuning the 4 pot because the majority of people who want more power would probably choose the 2.5 model...

Oh man! It isnt a VW engine; its a DKW engine, adapted from OHV to OHC by AUDI and then adapted/altered by Porsche (with a steel crank amongst many other changes). They arent VW door handles either.....

It is a VW except for
The pistons
The crank
The head
The sump
The valves
The camshaft
and quite a few other bits...[8|][:D]

the big restriction on the 924 is the head the intake port design is horrible and there isnt much can be done about it.. the cis system should be ok to 200bhp with a bigger (audi) throttle body.. although it is heavy and efi is more sophisticated.

exhausts dont seem to make much difference as the head flows so poorly anyway.

the 924 turbo (931) head flows better but i forget exactly whats needed to get one on there

all done you'll get maybe 160 if everythings done iirc

In my undergraduate days at Uni, I had a 2 litre 924. Living in Nottingham, I drove all the way to Gorton, Manchester to have the car maintained by Ernie Cheetham, his son Steve or anyone at Lodgesports.

Ernie was the person who started the Lodgesports sponsored 924 series races, and from what I recall the only mods possible -engine wise- were blueprinting, gas flowing, piper cam and headers (and loosing weight).

I know two people who participated in those race series: pm me with their contact details if you like.

Best regards,

Bert

Thanks for the replies - also since spoken to a couple of guys in the series who feel there is virtually no simple route or off the shelf tuning parts. Will speak to Lodge who sponsored the series until this year. I don't plan to do too much as the time sheets indicate it should be fairly competitive in it's class as it is - this particular car ran 1:27.32 at Snet whereas there was a 944 in the series this year did fastest lap 1:28.42.

Apologies if my reference to VW was politically incorrect - I don't mind if it's Porsche, VW, DKW or Dyson as long as I can get some power out of it and it doesn't go bang!

I think that Lodge took over when Colway pulled out. Lodge Sports is long gone now, Steve runs a car park clamping company...

Way. I bought a set of wheels off Steve a few months ago. The garage is still there but trading under another name.
