924 Turbo series 2

Hi,

This may be a daft question but is there a quick and easy way to tell a series 2 from a series 1 car ? ( I am about to look at a 1981 car and want to be able to confirm which series it is from )

Yes and it is very simple. The Turbo 2 has side repeaters for the indicators and the Series 1 hasn't.
OK there is nothing to syop an owner of a series 1 fitting repaeters.
I am sure that 924 Nutter will come up with a better answer.

 
How right how right. I bought what was alleged to be a Series 1 924 turbo and it turned out to have the 177 bhp pistons with the centralised combustion chambers. It had side repeaters, but the older slider type heater controls. They are both blindingly fast even today, so if the longer life of the turbo, the extra 7 bhp or even the way the power is delivered is important to you, then it is likely to be a 177 bhp car if it has NO jubilee clips or external rubber adapter from the pressure duct to the throttle body. Also the series one had a twin butterfly throttle body, (probably not dissimilar to the unblown 924) the series two has just one big round one. I belive that only the series two turbos had the PUR-O-LATOR condensate trap just inboard and behind the coolant expansion tank. It would also appear that series one turbos had green characters on the dials and gauges. If it has a rotary control for the fan speed then my instinct would be that it is a series two as nobody in their right mind would retro fit the series one dash. If a series one car has had a cunning interior update it would be given away by a heater that blows hot when set to cold, because the hot/cold lever moves in the opposite sense on the series one and has a different heater control valve which is a pain to access and not many cheats would go to the trouble of changing it. FYI the S1 runs lower CR and higher boost than the S2
 
We could also check the VIN number.
WPOZZZ93ZBN100001 onward is a Series 2 according to my records .
 
I am struggling to find any turbo's on the web for sale at the moment, how much money do they normally fetch in good to avreage cond? Also what are the inherant problems with the turbos do they need replacing ever?

 
performance wise are the 2 turbo series about the same, or is it worth looking for the s2 version?

Whats an s2?
In the 924 model range ( this is the 924 page) there were 3 models of 924 Turbo. Series 1 (170 bhp)... Series 2 (177 bhp) and Carrera GT (totally different price range) the only (wrong) way a 924 Turbo could be refered to as s2 would if it was a 'Series 2'.
 
sorry i just meant the series 2 924 Turbo, and i have read about the difference in bhp just wondered what that equated to in real life performance. As the book i have at home shows the series 1 being .7 of a second fast to 60 than the 170bph (edit should read 178bhp version) version.

The differnces are ...............................

Better fuel consumption due to DME system, the first in a Porsche.

Much better tubo life partly due to smaller faster turbo and partly better lubrication.

Turbo comes in earlier making for less noticable Turbo lag and better road manners.

Faster.. 143 against 140 MPH but don't take these figures seriously it is suggested that the 924 Turbo performance was understated by the factory as they would see off a naturally asperated 3 litre 911SC the then current model.
1980 911 SC 141 mph
1982 911 SC 146 mph
You will apptreciate that it would be an embassment for the iconic 911 to be beaten by a cheaper car with a much smaller engine.

To sum up. The series 2 is a far better car.

You make a mistake in your last line... The 170bhp car IS the series 1.

Factory figures give the series 2 .1 of a second quicker than the series 1. Lets face it 10th of a second at the traffic lights???!!

 
top stuff mate, thank you very much for all that information, and im sure i read a post somewhere explaining how to tell the difference(ignore that it was this thread havng a dim moment)

Thast because the New Age cars are SO lardy. My JDM Classic will show a clean pair of heels to any 924 and it is noticably quicker (up to illegal speeds) than my 250 Turbo was (and it was a three year old car then)!
