924 VS 944

How do you guys rate the little old 924 compared to your 944. Up until last week i was a 924 owner and loved it as to me it was still a porsche. I was an avid member of www.924.org where they all rekon the 924 is a better handling car than the 944. Well as i have now bought a 944 i can say that my 44 handles so much better than my 24 but is far scarier when the grip does kick out (As i found on a wet muddy roundabout). The 944 is a much better car in all aspects but I still miss my 924 as i see so few around.

Hopefully we' ll get a few more comparisons as more people get registered on the forum. At the moment there are precious few of us.

I can' t make a comparison as I' ve never even been in a 924, suffice to say they are the same basic design with 50/50 weight distribution so handle beautifully. The 924 is lighter so should handle better I suppose, but the later 944' s have much more power - mildly modified Turbos are pushing the 300 bhp mark []

I have owned both a 924 Turbo and a 944 S2 Cabriolet.

The 924T has a fair number of modifications not present on a ' standard' 924, not least of which include the suspension, brakes and gearbox, apart from the obvious changes to the engine.

IMHO the 924T was a taughter car to drive than the 944, probably down to less weight, no power steering and what is (in real terms) slightly stiffer suspension. Whilst rather ' laggy' , the engine also delivered it' s power with more of a bang than the 944 (including Turbo models that I have driven), making it feel faster than it actually is.

The S2 is, however, a better all round performer (which you would expect from a newer car). The way it delivers its power is superb and ultimate braking and roadholding probably exceed the 924T (not least due to wider tyres, abs, etc). It is also more comfortable and is the car that I would choose for any journey of distance.

[8|] Simple. The 944 is a better car. The 996 is a better car than an early 911. Maybe not more desirable, but better. That is what development is all about. Consider where the 924 came from. It was a car designed for Volkswagen as a front wheel drive car. Production by VW was cancelled in favour of the Rabbit and Golf. Porsche bought the design back and modified it to rear wheel drive. It was then produced in the Audi/NSU factory (as were early 944' s) and the rest is history right up to the 968. Now, how about comparing the 944 with 968?

That would be about the only fair comparison with both cars being of a simillar age and specification. As noted with the 911 example, there is little point comparing an early 924 with a late 944.

Any road up, in the comparison as noted above the 924 is faster - less frontal area, so less drag. Does that mean it' s better?

I was comparing my 1982 924 with my 1983 944 but i must admit to a preference to the way the 924 looks over the 944, yes it dosent have the aggresive stance but it looks cleaner and sleeker and i would say it looks like a good classic car. The 944 engine is head and shoulders above the 924 engine its quicker, quieter, easier to use and more fuel efficient. i still miss my 924, more so now that i see so many other 944' s on the road, in my 924 i rarely saw another similar mode.

[]When Porsche first produced the 2.5 924S (with the 944 engine) they had to detune it as it was faster than the 944.
Comparisons between the 2 litre 924 and the 924S are not straight forward as most of the ' S' is 944, suspension, brakekes etc.
How about comparing any of them with the 924 Turbo?[8D]

The Autocar & Motor Road Test from 1983 has several references between the 924 Turbo and 944.

Yes the 924 Turbo was quicker in a straight line but the following bits were interesting.

30-50 5.0 (924 Turbo) 4.1 (944)
50-70 6.1 (924 Turbo) 6.4 (944)
70-90 9.6 (924 Turbo) 10.5 (944)

They also timed 0-60 in a 944 at 7.2 Secs and said that the 944 has better MPG than any of the 924' s. They also said the 944 was esier to drive consistantly fast than the 924 Carrera GT due to its wider wheelbase.
