924 Wanted

OK... a friend has been persuaded to look at a Porsche 924 rather than a Mk I Golf! I think he is now convinced that it offers a better deal, but now need to get him aware of what cars are about, and what he needs to look out for to ensure he doesn't buy a pup!

Because of his budget, and fear of complexity/his ability to maintain, he is looking for a straightforward 2litre 924, not an S or a Turbo... in his position, I think this is a wise move. He has a budget of around £750, with a bit of room to manuover. Because he has seen our 924T Cab project, he would ideally like a red car with a linen (beige) interior - was such a combination ever available in a 924? I suspect he may have to find the right car irrespective of interior, and change it, which is where the downward flexibility in the budget is likely to come in. I believe he is mechanically more competant than he thinks he is (which is a lot better than the other way round!) and am certain he will maintain a car well, so an ideal candid for some-ones pride and joy... What he does have confidence in is polishing! He is, therefore, looking for something mechanically and structurally sound that he can polish up.

Unfortunately, at a recent event in our area, no 924s!!! So ideally it would be good if there is some-one relatively local to North Dorset with a 924 that would be willing to let him have a look, have a chat, and wet his appetite.

After that, he is looking for a 924. ideally red, otherwise a solid colour rather than a metallic I believe, mechanically sound, as mentioned budget around £750. Obviously, travelling isn't so much of a problem for the right car.

Comments of things to look out for (my first thoughts are battery tray), and what kind of car he can expect to get for that kind of money are welcomed.

Thanks all,

Tref.

Id suggest widening his search to include the 924S too. Theyre selling for very little now and Id expect to be able to buy an equally good S for similar money to a clean 924. You arent adding a great deal of complication or potential extra cost either, beyond the belts: and most independents wont charge a great deal for a full front of engine.

Belts are THE reason for excluding the 924S - it is a toy, that he can have on the basis of carrying out repairs himeself... Given he hasn't changed a belt on anything before, but I have suggested that with guidance he is more than competant enough on a 924... I would say a 944/924S requires too many judgement calls on waterpump, rollers, top hats, etc, etc... doing all of it would blow his budget... and a cheap 924S will probably require them to be done!!! Obviously there are always exceptions, and open minded enough should the right exception come along...
I'm amazed at the lack of response here though, I though one struggled to give away a 924. Is everyone on a different forum?

Think most of the cheap ones went on the scrappage scheme so that took most of them off the Market along with a lot of other makes. I've friends who can't find a decent ordinary car under £3,000 at the moment!!

I find there is more traffic on the US sites ... try...

I went for a 924S purely because of the PAS and it was intended for the wife. Since I got the car, I use it as it so good!. Ignoring the engine for now, the mechanics of the 924 & 924S and the early 944 are all very similar. Front suspension is Mk I golf for example. The early 924 engine is basically same technology as any early/ mid 80's VW i.e. bosch mechanical fuel injection.

Google '924 buyers guide' and you'll get plenty of advice ...

Definatly worth going for an S if posible, yes fair point on the belts, but a used engien can be had for 200 quid if he needs one.

Might be worth keeping an eye on this 924S on ebay, only 270 odd quid with 2 days to go at the mo, are others for a grand or so
