hello, could anyone tell me if the gearbox from a 944 will fit in my 86 924s and if so what age of unit am i looking for? i'm not going to take the plunge without knowing for cirtain that the little bits like speedo cable / ratio's etc are exact matches. it's a bit like having to know whether your Mk1 golf GTI's got an 020 or 02A box. model / serial numbers would be helpful if possible.
thankyou

Looks like 944 up to 1985 as the part no. is the same, but not a box from any kind of S2 even from a very early '85 model as the part no. is different. Externally the box might have the same dimensions and thus physically fit but you would be taking a chance on ratios. Go for the non-oval dash box.

..or you can fit a later gearbox, but only if you change the crossmember and fuel tank too (which is what I did: result, increased range and lighter car). Whilst you're there it's not a bad (or expensive) mod.

..on the basis that a big plastic tank is lighter than a small coated metal tank. So long as you put in the same amount of petrol, obviously.
