924S Auto Gearbox

My beautiful 924S auto is in need of serious TLC, the gearbox needs major surgery. I have found a seconhand box for £400 plus vat from a breakers yard, but I am a bit wary of purchasing what could be another problem box. Does anybody know what sort of price it would be to recondition my old box? I suppose that reconditioning my original box will carry some kind of gurantee that the breakers yard box will not have. I am in West Lancs. [:(]

Bloody Hell! Is it 1994 all over again? £460 for an early auto box in 2009 is ridiculous! I suppose that that must have been either DVB or Buttercup? Id suggest that you keep looking until you find one for one quarter of the price and that you try to get the cush drive thrown in, if its any good. Ive seen a number of good automatic cars (944 series one & series two - although theyll be different, you get the point) sell for well under £500 and you can drive those to establish the transaxles suitability!

That is steep TBH, expecially with no comeback should it be just as bad, there was one at a know expensive breakers yard over here in Newcastle 3 months ago from an early '44 for £250 inc VAT. The problem with having your reconditioned is that they won't know whats needed until they open it up, what's actually wrong with yours?

Thanks Simon, I get the point. A replacement box is a bit of an unknown quantity for me, so your advice is warmly received, Ta very much
Tim

Not quite sure yet until monday when we open up the unit, but it sounds like pebbles in the casing and won't change gear. it was low on ATF but not dry, this was rectified yesterday, but there was still no change to the way it is working. I am just trying to line up all my options so I can make a swift decision on the course of action to get me back on the road ASAP, with as little expense as possible. thanks for the advice. Tim

But you still have normal forward motion? I would try dropping the pan and having a look first, you never know could have just stirred up all the crud if your lucky

Had my 924S gearbox reconditioned a couple of years back, fully guaranteed for twelve months - £500. What you have been quoted for a second hand box seems somewhat excessive. Then there is fitting on top. Look in yellow pages for Automatic Gearbox Repairers. The box isn't anything fancy so probably best to get it reconditioned.

Cheers,

There is a good Auto-box repairer in Preston-just off the main Blackpool road-bossman called Graham-they completely strip & rebuild-repair torque convertors,etc-did my BMW box but can,t give you a price like Fred, because it included removing & replacing in the car.

Cheers,
Colin.

thanks fellas, the advice is great, I have as I see it two options, repair with warranty or buy secondhand 'blind', think i will find the auto box repairer in Preston first; the box is comming out tomorrow so we can have a look at it then to determine the extent of the damage, I thought the mechanics on the 'S' model were bulletproof, I guess I got hit with the 'silver bullet'.
I will keep you posted over the next few days.
cheers,
Tim

Thats handy to know, mines not very well either, hoping to get a look at it this week as well, had a split pipe back end of last year, dropped it fluid then when I filled it back up its just slowly died, lost forward motion but have full reverse, so assumed it must be a snapped band in the box, but I know where there's an audi tansaxle box, so would that work as a direct replacement should mine be knackered?

We opted to leave the box in the car until tomorrow, the auto gearbox man ( Auto gearbox repair services in Preston) is coming down to look at the car with the box in, so he can see and drive the car with the box still engaged to try to ascertain the damage in-situ. I will further keep you all posted on all the unfolding action, it might get dirty.
Tim

Keep us posted Tim, always good to know a good auto gearbox repair man. They seem to be getting thin on the ground which is silly considering that automatics are much more common.

Cheers,

Finally got the car back on the road, sterling work from my mechanic kevin at Classic Car Workshop in Coppull; I bought a second hand 944 auto box from Elliot at PorkaParts, £175 + delivery, and kevin's team fitted it, its a gem, the car runs better now than with the original box; better kick-down and much more responsive. Not only that Elliot from Porkaparts gave me a 7 day money back guarrantee, to make sure it was in A1 working condition when fitted, good bloke. Bring on summer!!

Sounds like a comparitively cheap fix you got, well done.

Hope it remains okay.

Auto boxes are the pain of my life and annoyingly I'm restricted to using them. (Unless I'm on the bike - normal manual box on that).

Cheers,

Fred

I would certainly try Elliot at Porkaparts, my experience of using his parts has been a happy one, maybe he can fix you up also? good luck, Tim
