924S engine upgrade

I know this is a 944 forum, but it's the same engine....

Any idea what the sensible limit is for tuning the 1988 2.5litre 924S engine? OK, I know it's down to the individual what is sensible....... [;)]

Just wondered how far these can be tuned before you might as well buy something else. Might you get 200bhp without breaking the bank? or 225bhp? I don't see much info anywhere on tuning the 2.5 engine. Any thoughts? I posted on the 924 forum but only received suggestions about changing the engine for a 16V or 968 version but I wasn't looking to do that. The one I've got is sound so I wanted to develop it further.

Who are the best independents for the 924S?

cheers ......... Phil

Thanks Andrew, that's a good starting list. What figures am I looking for on the compression and leak-down tests? It's got the latest (1988) 160bhp engine.

With regard to the weight reduction, where's the best place to start for maximum effect. The car's a 'weekend only' one, but does need to take the wife and small kids occasionally, so a complete interior strip-out isn't feasible. I don't mind removing soundproofing etc, but it still needs 4 useable seats.

Phil,

I know a 2.5 owner on Pistionheads.com who had a blown engine fully rebuilt by Kevin Eacock of EMC engines in Birmingham (he converts and prepares the 944 series race cars). The rebuild cost circa £1500 (I think) and included all the things Andrew mentioned as well as balancing and lightening the crank, matching piston weight etc and he had it dyno'd at just under 190bhp.

That's pretty expensive for an extra 30bhp over standard

sorry to jump in on the band wagon so to speak
Andrew

I have a early 924s (150 bhp) and i saw on promaxmotorsport that chip your talking about to increase bhp alittle[:D]however would this fit my car as i think my ECU is some how fixed,ie no way in as if to say keep your dirty little hands off !
I dont really want to rock the world with my car performance but i think i would like to give it a little more of an edge [:)]

Marc, come on, you know you're going to get caught. A new chip to add to the clear rear lenses you mentioned the other day. You're asking for trouble.... [:(] ... and I've just seen that you want a shiny exhaust too. You're heading for BIG trouble matey.

cheers ......... Phil
