924s - gear stick not centering when in neutral!

Hello - an '87 924s that i'm interested in has a problem where the gearstick does not 'spring return' to the centre when in neutral. Does anyone know what would cause this and how easy is it to fix.?

I saw a similar problem in a 924s was looking at. The lever didn't seem to centre so changes from 2nd to 3rd or 5th to 4th took concentration. The car had no been used much recently. I did buy the car and with use level now centres. I did discuss with Northways how hard it would be to fix - they said easy to libricate the mechanism but it needs the gearbox lower to gain access
