924S Mass Air Flow Meter

A short while ago my 924S engine cut out and I couldn't get it restarted. My friendly local mechanic diagnosed a problem with the mass air flow meter and refurbished it (from a video on Youtube!). When I collected the car it ran well all the way home. A couple of weeks later and it won't start again. On advice, I disconnected the electric lead from the MAFM and it will tick over but not rev, so probably the same thing again. My local Porsche dealer wants £500 for a new one and there are reconditioned ones on the web for a couple of hundred. I'm a bit wary given my previous experience plus I'm not 100% sure that that is the problem. Any information or advice would be most welcome.

Sounds more like your engines crank sensors-the wires from the connectors at the connection point at the rear of the engine at the bulkhead, down to the 2 sensors at the bellhousing lose their flexibility with the heat/vibration etc after many years & cause starting problems.
Try jiggling the 2 connections/disconnect then reconnect & attempt to start..Normally works until finally they need replacement.
When cranking the engine, carefully watch your rev counter -it should give a flick or two off the zero mark -if no flicker-tends to confirm the sensors.

GFS sell pattern replacements around £70 mark ,if pushed-replacement in their diecast holder at the bellhousing can be a pig if the originals are stuck in by cathodic corrosion/growth of the aluminium canisters forming the body of the sensors
