924S New shocks, springs and throttle cam

Just collected my 1988 924S from the Porscheshop in Brimingham and what a fantastic transformation! They have replaced all the worn out old shock-absorbers with new Bilsteins and fitted uprated springs. The car now sits flat and is wonderful in corners - like it is on rails. This has solved the 'juddering' on hard braking and removed that vague feeling if you corner too fast - totally transforming the handling which I thought was ok before the work. I can't believe the difference.

Another thing I have had replaced was the throttle repsonse cam, again what a transformation. This changes the relationship between the pedal and the throttle, reduces travel, and makes it linear. The throttle bites straight away and is a vast improvement for so little money, it makes driving feel so much better. If you have a 924S or 944 I strongly recommend it.

I found the staff at the Porscheshop incredibly helpful and friendly and Ian gets 10 out of 10 for customer service- Nothing is too much trouble. This is a personal opinion and not advertising!

I have spent a great afternoon learning my car again with the new set up and even in the wet (and snow) is is vastly better. I think we sometimes forget that even the newest 924 is now 17 years old. Replacing key components with vastly improved modern versions can transform the handling and performance at least back to what it was when it left the factory if not better. Not cheap I admit but better than huge depreciation on some boring Eurobox.

Anyway thought I would share this with you and hope see you on 1st May at the frontrunner event.

Hi John, good to hear from you again. What price were the shocks? Fitted or not?

I'd seen these throttle response cams and wondered what they're like - I guess they're good from what you say.

Hi John, I to would like to know how much the work cost? Also what is this throttle thingy you had done is a standard bit or an add on?
 
Same thoughts came to me. How much for the shocks?
Always been scetical about the cam though. Can't help thinking that if its such an easy thing to do, why did Porsche design it the way that they did?
 
I'd also like to know how much the work cost, it's the next thing to do after getting the paintwork sorted on mine - I've seen the difference between mine and cars with new shocks/springs and the difference (as John says) is a revelation.

At this rate maybe we can get a group discount at Porscheshop! [:)]

Try adding a stainless steel exhaust to your car now, Eurocarparts.co.uk and with the responce cam you ge the sound track to the responce [:D]

Thanks for the postings from Phil, Mike, Paul and Phil

OK now for the bad news.

The cost of the new Bilstein shocks were £434 including VAT plus extra for fitting 3 to 4 hours labour (I can't do anything mechanical so have to pay others - a fact of life which I live with) and then you need a full 4 wheel geometry set-up another £100. The springs were around £100. I also got wonderful customer service and sound advice as part of the experience. All the prices are in the Porscheshop catalogue.

I daresay some of you could get the parts cheaper and fit them yourself. But I dropped my car off and then collected it later in the week fully sorted, no hassle and I repeat it has transformed the car's handling, improved stability for braking and enhanced the whole driving experience.

To answer Mike's throttle cam question - yes it does feel so much better to me, the car feels more responsive and more 'sporty'. Having little travel and no 'sloppy feeling' makes driving easier and helps on overtaking. I wonder if others feel the same?
 
Other good mods include;fit Bosch superfour spark plugs they remove most of the "Big Four " lumpy idle,improve response etc,cut the black plastic top off the airflow meter(very carefully with a sharp Stanley knife);you can then adjust the snail spring cam by a notch or two on the plastic to weaken its effect on the airflow meter flap.This allows the airflow meter to slightly richen the mixture quicker in response to throttle movement because the flap angle is linked to fuel injection ECU.
then glue back the top with a clear plastic glue.

I had them fitted at the same time as the throttle cam and they do seem to make a difference but having had so much done at the same time it is hard to know what contributed what.

Would it benefit the 2.0 model as well?
 
im only guessing Paul but its worth a go, you can even pick them up from halfords[;)] i think the engine is a little resposive
