924S year/Model Change (re BHP increase )?

It was given the same engine as the 944 as the new 16 valve 944 had been announced and there was now no need to protect the 8 valve from the faster 924S.
Compession was a little higher and the engine gave out 160bhp (as opposed to 150)
I own a 150 bhp model (as well as a Turbo2) and have access to a 160 bhp car.
The 150 bhp is smoother and runs on standard premium fuel. The 160 bhp model is very sheightly sharper, needs Premium fuel and the top speed seems the same.
You say the increase was 12 bhp... not true uop to '87 the 944 was rated at 162bhp but in '88 they rated it at 160bhp.

I'm not sure why you're asking about power mods?
If it's raw power you want, then there are any number of cheap performance cars on E-bay. The whole point of the 924/924S/944/944S2/944 turbo/968 range is the way they drive.
Your budget is limited, or else a highly-modified 944 turbo is the way to go at £15K plus. If you want a better driving experience from a 924, I'd suggest the following as relatively cheap ways to get far more performance than a cheap chip. [&:]
First, check and renew if necessary all the service items.
Next, check and/or replace all braking, steering and suspension parts.
Then, take a performance-driving course - followed by other courses recommended by the instructor.
Then, and only then, you need worry about whether an extra 10 BHP will make you either enjoy the car more, or a better driver.

Basically i am after a porsche full stop no other car would do it has been a life long dream, However i am a keen researcher in anything i buy and like to find out as much info as possible so i make the correct decision with the future in mind (just got a Micheal Cotton book through today to find out more info . I was after somthing with good performance to get the blood pumping etc to start with so wanted to make a good informed decision. My budget is limited to about £1.5k but ideally i wanted somthing that i could get cheap learn a bit of mechanical DIY on and get it working at peak performance over time. I intended to replace/check all the things you mentioned and possibly look at getting the exhaust system replaced etc. I am just struggling to decide between a 944 and a 924S at the moment thats all, i have driven a 944S2 and turbo and loved um both but realise they are a little over budget so thought a 924 may be a good honest starting car..., hope that makes sense as i don't mean to come accross as some performance obsessed racer....

I have had a 944 S in the past, and now have a 1988 924S. I simply prefer the look (and weight!) of the 924 shell. But the power thing is a bit annoying, so I'm doing the most stupid thing possible, stuffing a 944 S2 engine, transaxle and brakes onto the 924S. Not really recommended unless you're certifiably insane.
It's not that there aren't millions of performance cars on ebay, nor is my 924S lacking handling, with an uprated KW v3 suspension, but getting outdragged by turbo diesel taxis does begin to take the shine off your baby. Wouldn't happen with a decent 924T.
If you opt for a Turbo go for a series 2. It is a far better car than the first model. It is faster more powerfull and more economical as well as having a more reliable turocharger.
Is this going to be a purley fun car ? If so I find the Turbo puts a grin on my face that the 'S' could never do. Having said that the 'S' is faster on the hill at Prescott as the power comes in quicker, no turbo lag.
As an alroud car the 'S' is best. More comfort, better in traffic, quieter.
So you pays your money and makes your choice.

Good choice for a fun (huligan) car as it will sve you £*****'s on the tuning aids you were looking at.
BUT BE CAREFUL a duff turbo could cost a lot of money and look for a weaknes in selecting 1st and 2nd gear.
