Does the 924s have the same engine as the 944?
Have been offered a 924s and was thinking of using it to harvest spares from for my 83 944lux,what parts would be interchangeable,if the 924 has power steering would this fit onto the 944 and how much of a job is it to fit?
Would the 924s accept later style design 90 alloys without the need for spacers and if so what would need to be swopped onto the 944 so i can fit the later style wheels?
Any information greatly appreciated
 
Hi sheep, the 924S has the same 2.5 liter engine and drivetrain as the early 944 and shares the same maintenance issues. I'm not sure about the powersteering will have to ask a specialist like JZ. As for D90 wheels, i think theres an issue wether the 924S has ABS as the D90 wheels are design to fit ABS hubs. If someone else knows more info please correct me[8|] I'm sure D90 wheels would stick out the arches.
 
Early 924s models were 150bhp as Porsche didn't want shed loads of disgruntled 944 owners saying their car was slower than a 924s with the same 163 bhp output, due to the reduced weight and frontal area. The 924s Le Mans had 163 bhp and late model 924s had 163 but I think this was controlled in the D M E as the 1988 model dme has a different part number to the dme in earler models, which is different again to the 944. The cam in the 924s has the same part number as the 944, and so does the power steering rack.
 
Re wheels, if it helps, my 924 turbo (5bolt) had a set of wheels from a Boxster 'S' with spacers and they fit under the arch, do not rub, fill the arch nicely and do not impinge on the bodywork at full lock. I think they are a bit oversize mind, as at 3750 r p m ( singular, as the r already stands for revolutions) in the appropriate place the car is showing 100 mph, and the acceleration up to 70 is only just a good as a 1.8 Focus, but then the turbo starts to blow and its no contest. I do however get 27 per gallon and 924 turbos weren't noted for their economy.
 
I can't be certain but I thought that all 924S models had ABS. IIRC this came in on 1985.5MY and can be identified by wheels with 52.3 offset rather than 23.3. The ABS hubs were wider hence the offset being adjusted. I think you'll find the 924S wheels will fit, but as with Nutter you'll need some spacers otherwise they'll sit too far in-board, to the point of rubbing on everything in sight !

According to Peter Morgan in 'Original 924/944/968' the 1986/87 engines were 150BHP with the 944 at 163 BHP. Porsche obviously realised by 1988 that building a special 150BHP version of the engine did not make manufacturing sense. Apparently the only change to the engine was to revert the 924S to the higher compression pistons that the 944 was using. Where the 3 BHP was lost from the 944 I don't know - maybe in the DME change that's mentioned?

I guess by 1988 the 944's different styling (I didn't say 'better') had established the 944 and the similar performance wasn't the issue it may have been when they were launching the 944. Again, according to Peter Morgan the 924S has a better drag coefficient and with the same engine was quicker........ now there's an idea - you should be cannibalising your 944 to rebuild the 924S, not the other way round [;)].

Can't say I entirely agree with the low-compression pistons, as for example, the Mahle pistons, part number 944 103 091 07 are listed for the 24 and the 44, and depending on the honing tolerances *** 17, ***27, *** 57, are listed for both too. Dunno!
 
hmmmm... having written it I did think about it again and a 13BHP [1] loss just by reducing the compression ratio sounds a lot.


[1] - (944) 163BHP to (924S) 150BHP with just a piston change???

I have a Zermatt 924S 1988!
I've Been Informed the Belts and rollers Need Changing at Every 30K...
Being a 944 Engine I guess this Question is Best Being answered in the 944 section!
 
Change the belts and rollers NOW.
With a 924S/944 if the belt goes you will probably loose the entire engine not just a few valves.
This is not a DIY job as special gauges are needed to set up the tension and even if replace the belts you will still need to go to a Porsche specialist.
While you are at it you would be wise to replace the water pump as it is the same job and a siezed water pump will snap the belts.
I bought an 'S' and the first thing I did was a belt change. Thgis is not an option. If you dont believe me, start a thre on the 944 pages and wait for the response.

Cast iron or tubular steel, which is standard 924S ?

Hi I've got a 924s as a track car..

Both manifolds (cast iron/tubular) were fitte 1986 to 1987, but as the two are pretty interchangeable, and as the 924S seem to have had just about anything fitted that was lying around the factory, what is fitted when seems to be a bit up to chance. As far as I know, both are equally good/restrictive, cast is slightly heavier, both crack. My '88 has tubular.
 
Fit Bosch superfour spark plugs,remove any slack from the accelerator cable or change the airflow cable cam to the fast action circular type,and initial pick-up can be improved by removing the black plastic top to the airflow meter & reducing the spring tension on the airflap by moving the helical spring round 1 or 2 notches on the black plastic cam,this in conjunction with resetting the air bipass adjustment using the allen key in the toolkit or some other one if missing using an exhaust gas meter.The Gunson one is good enough.

so there's a couple of things that you've suggested which I shall pursue.

I would go to Halfords and spend approx £100 on Meguirs car cleaning products. Everything from bodywork wax etc to carpet shampoo. Go and buy a set of Goodyear tyres. Mine cost me about £200 for the set of four from a OPC. Doing this will smarten up the car quite a bit.
As for the performance do what the other guys say, but also go for a proven reliable chip from ProMaxMotorsport as well as a K&N sports filter. This filter will save you money long term. Also before I forget get someone to buy you a stainless steel exhuast for xmas. Overall you gain an extra few lbs of torque and some more bhp.
