928 S2

Hello, I need some advice. I have been offered a 928 S2. It's been off the road for the last 7 years.
She's a non runner and will need the sills replacing. She'll need a respray and some interior work. She's showing 126k on the clock. I would imagine the brakes will need an overhaul.

The seller is looking for £2500.

I know the details are brief but would this be a worthwhile car to rescue?

Thanks

You could easily potentially spend up to twice the purchase price (on top) for all the things needing doing you list for the car - sills, respray, brakes, potential engine work, etc, etc
My advice would be to look for a good solid runner... [;)]

If you could get it back to v good condition by spending £5k on it, as suggested above, then you would have a car worth a lot more than you spent on it. However, having bought an S4 last year that was in great condition to begin with, and have since been bringing it right up to tip-top condition, I think £5k may not be enough.......unless you do a lot of it yourself.

If you can do it yourself it may come in at £5k, if you're involving professionals a restoration on an S2 will be well into 5 figures.

Hi,

It really is as many have suggested almost impossible to predict what you think you'll need to spend on it, and what the reality would be should you take the plunge.

Time may or may not be a factor........ Only it could take years if you did it all yourself?

Equipment and expertise come into it, you can only do so much yourself even if you know how how to, the professionals
usually have all the gear, and do such work every day, so you can easily start to spend large amounts but this may be actually more cost effective and quicker than having a go yourself. Also any issues they should sort where as with yourself you've no comeback but to spend again..

And lastly it also depends how fussy you are, and how far you want to go with it ?

If your looking for a concourse show and shine? You'll be needing a remortgage! lol ....

Many people start such a project and then either run out of money or the Will! and sell up, as many cars are seen on the Bay!
As unfinished projects.

7 Years is a long time to be "SAT" dormant, and if it's needs bodywork, interior and brakes, possibly exhaust ? suspension, wheels & Tyres etc..etc..
Any prospective list of cost quoting will soon add up and from my previous of 10 Porsche's so far I'd factor in the worst case scenerio
costs and then add a bit on top..

They are a great beast, I had a 1986 S2 (4.7 auto) and it was in good nick but had not been used (Like many) much at all...which I mistook this for being great, this was however not the case as many gremlins cropped up and some I never cured...but the more I used it (Daily) the better it got, and I ended up spending thousands of the Engine (Belts, pulleys, water pump etc..) also New Discs all all round , the caliper plates had lifted, and also the suspension was tired.. But i didn't have to do any bodywork at all.

The total cost of buying it and doing all this was twice what i sold it for !! although this was in 2005 and values have gone silly since...

Do your research, sums and hit the Go or Pass button..

Roger,

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I've decided to give this one a miss. I'll start looking for a running and driving car!

Ok, although you'll still need lots of money either way...

Maybe a few (honest & Realistic) replies have put you off, which is not the case but depending on how you look
at it the end result could be the same, and sometimes restoring a car is better as you've replaced a lot more things
than a running car....but only if you have the patience.

If you don;t and want something up and running and hardly wanting anything at all, stretch your budget as far as possible and buy the most expensive car you can.

However, You may be able to offer 2K for this one and spend 10K on it, then having a great car which may or may not be worth 15K if the market keeps climbing (Lots of maybe's there!)

Or you buy a car at 11K and find you spend 1k on it resulting in the same expediture as above but the amount of new and restored components will not be as high as the Full resto ?
