Help! I drove my 1982 930 for about 5 minutes, but the first time i used full throttle the engine just died. This happened when the engine was just starting to come on boost at about 3000rpm.The engine will turn over on the starter, but will not fire at all.I have checked all of the fuses,no wires seem out of place, the cds ignition box is making the right noises, and i can smell fuel when trying to start the car so i guess fuel is getting to the engine.CAN ANYONE HELP AS TO WHAT IS WRONG ! Thanks,Andrew.

Hi Andrew

No expert on these, but it sound like some electrical failure (ignition/coil etc), basically if it just died on you and you had nothing, thats the first thing I would look at, obviously getting fuel as you can smell it!

Also spark plugs! any a failure, think this model was a 6 Cylinder, would it start on 4 or 5 Cylinders!

Hope you get it started again, sure you will, but it's a pain!!!

May be your fuel pumps. Sounds like it is priming okay for start.

Suspect front pump? Is the rear overloading (increased whin?) because it is taking all the strain?

Check the two fuel pump relays up front.

Hi Andrew,

I've owned a 930 for almost 18 years (since new) and always when it failed to start or broke down it was an electrical fault with the fuel pumps (usually the fuse holder gets damaged due to overheating because the pumps need replacing). The procedure I usually try to start it is:

1. Replace the fuel pump fuse. As far as I can remember is the seventh counting from the windscreen side. Check for signs of overheating in the fuse and fuse holder.

2. Take both fuel pump relays out and short the pins to have the pump running constantly.

When you have both pumps running try to start the car. I usually have the throttle fully open when I try to start it. If it starts switch the engine off quickly and put the relays back on.

In the last 18 years I have changed the fuse holder twice and the pumps once. It is strongly advisable to change both pumps together.

I hope this helps you out.

John
