930 immobilizer problems ?

hi ,

anyone out there have instructions or a guide as to how the factory immobilizer works in a 1988 930 ??
its the one with the little electronic key that you insert under the steering column , im assuming this is a factory option ?

ours beeps a couple of times and then you start the car , but sometimes it seems to lock up and you can't start the car for hours !

any help appreciated !
 
It's not a factory system. Maybe dealer fit, or as See Ya says, aftermarket.
Alarm / immobiliser issues tend to be a pain, and time consuming to sort out.
In the long run it may be cheaper to invest in a new Cat 1 system that meets your insurance requirements and operates more efficiently.

John is right.

Maybe your best idea, get it removed and put in a Cat 1 system.
That is what, I had to have done to get insurance on my 911.

 
If you look at back 964 forum posts on the same subject ,there is plenty of info,I posted some of it.This was a Porsche retro fit at the opc's made by I think Hamilton & Palmer who are very helpful when you ring them-they can supply spares.Generally,they recommend that the twin fuse block which you should find under the dash attached to the main loom there(about 9ins from the ignition lock) should be examined ,cleaned and fuses checked for contact,soundness,etc.This block breaks in the power circuit & feeds the immobiliser via the small electronic key.Sorry,but their details are at home,but am sure someone will post this info before I could.
 
cheers guys , I'll check the part numbers on this tomorrow and maybe give hamilton a call see if its one of theres , also will check the fuses.

failing that i reckon pull the lot out and get either new immobliser or cat 1 alarm , prob about £300 in fitting so prob worth it considering the hassel with this system

Good idea, start fresh with a CAT 1 my system cost £500 all in with fitting.
You will have to get a certificate done, as well to show the insurance company what system you have CAT 1 etc .

 
I obtained a certificate from Chester OPC stating that the system in our 964 meets Thatcham cat1 status-it was designed by Hamilton & Palmer for that reason as a retrofit by OPC's prior to delivery to combat the security problem encountered with insurance co's.Frankly,why spend £300 to £500 when a few mins investigation might solve it.Even the receptor in the steering column shroud is only £40 if I remember correctly.H&P comes up in GOOGLE.
