930 Mods

Hi,

I'll just 'open this to the floor' and see what the consensus says a reasonable FWHP rating for a 3.3 Euro-spec, pre-'89 930 with the following modifications is:

  • 1-bar Wastegate spring
  • K27-7200-'S' turbocharger
  • SC Cams
350-odd bhp? Any ideas?

(I understand that the spring alone is supposed to be worth +20bhp, and the turbo over +35bhp.)

id spend £100 and get it on a rolling road, when i had mine it only had 330bhp as i was told my sc cams had been timed incorrectly and after another bill for setting up it put out 360 bhp .--- sc cams, k&n filter, airpump removed, b&b headers, 1 bar boost spring ,std turbo though

Hi Tom

You have my view by separate email - I think about 360bhp with it all working properly

Simon

Stock cams give peak power at 5,500rpm; SC Cams make the car much more eager early on but peak at 5,000rpm (and it's near enough all done by 6,000rpm); what do 964 Cams do to the powerband? (Do they just push it even higher up the rev range?)

Have you previously fitted 964 cams to a 930, Graeme? (I'm guessing from your moniker that, if you're car's a 3.6 litre, it came with 964 cams?)

you are spot on that my 911 is 3.6 and air cooled and it runs standard factory gt2 evo cams ;).
Going back into the 90's SC cams where the common mod on 930 turbo engines. Guys then realised
that the 964 Carrera 2 cams gave better lift and duration. I had this built back in 1998 by Protech and
sold it to Rupert Lewin about 5 years ago.

3.2 carrera targa G50 shell with 930 turbo engine, trick KKK from the states (can't tell you what it was
as I don't know) C2 cams, uprated fuel head. (engine totally standard otherwise). At 0.8 bar boost she made 390bhp on Bob Watson's rolling road. I used to run it at 1 bar.
It would pull like a train all the way to 8000rpm but 6800rpm was safer. At 1.2 bar it was as quick as a 580bhp Cobra down the start finish at donnington. The C2 cams do need modifying I think from memory for the oil scavenge pump.

The SC330 is also available as a less aggressive cam than the 964 profile.

Tom, you should get an IC before spending money on cams. Not sure I would run 1bar without a better IC than stock.

Really not too bothered about the charge temperature, as the weather around here rarely gets hot (and if it does, just drive fast in a high-gear [:D]) But seriously, I always use high-octane fuel.

And I really would love you finally to fit all that kit (which has been kicking about your garage for years) to your car! [:)]
