930 Oil? HELP

Hi Guys!

Just about to do an oil change on my 930, which oils and grades do you use? Car has done 52K if that help, and used as a weekend toy only!

Some say mobil 1 0-40 is too thin and will make the engine sound bad! Any thoughts on this? Others say Silkolene pro S 10-50 is the stuff to use? I take it I should only be using fully synthetic?

Use a high quality fully or semi synthetic, but not of the ultra thin variety.
A number of suppliers use Castrol Magnatec 10W40
 
Bob Watson put Shell Helix 10W40 in my DS935, whereas Porsche Chapelgate put Mobil 1 of unspecified viscosity in my other 930 - although it's probably the 0W40 as that went onto Porsches approved list in 2002, but presumably for current vehicles .
I've always tended to avoid Mobil 1 in the older 911s, primarily because of the way it manages to find ways out that thicker oils don't, and for years used VAGs Synta semi synthetic.
The bottom line seems to be to avoid ultra low viscosity but don't skimp on quality.
 
Porshe tend to recommend 0w-40 or 5w-40.

I personally favour the 5w-40 as in UK climate 0w is really not necessary. 5w-40 is also more thermally stable than 0w-40 as it has a narrower viscosity gap.

Magnatec is a semi-synthetic and I personally would not recommend such a basic oil for a Porsche.
