930 - performance pistons

Just done track day on Sunday and broke my 930. I have yet to drop the engine, but it is looking as though I have split a cylinder barrel!

I will use opportunity for another upgrade (can't help myself). I am inclined to go for 3.4L JE pistons/barrels which are stronger. These come with varying compression ratios and would appreciate any advice on safe CR to use with single plug set-up.

many thanks - Simon

NB - The car was pulling speeds off the end of the speedo and reaching 6800rpm in 5th so did deserve to break!

This was at RAF Marham in Norfolk. It had a 1 mile straight so plenty of room to stretch the cars legs!

I have spoken to Bob Watson and he has suggested I use 98mm Mahle units with 7.5:1 CR. These can be obtained from the US. We will ring the heads and barrels rather than rely on the face to face seal and also gas flow the crankcase. This will provide 3.4l, better off turbo performance and extra strength to cope with 1.2bar. Will be glad to get it all back together and run-in.

Hope it will not take all winter. Andial have been great and have dispatched pistons and barrel set today. $3800 plus delivery and VAT. Say it quickly and it almost sounds cheap.

I had throught I would upgrade oil pump as well. Recommendation is GT3 RSR unit, but at $1,750 I think I will give it a miss - over a £1000 for an oil pump seems a lot of money!

You should twin plug the heads while you have them off really. You can just fit spark plugs for now and get them working properly at a later date. The larger the bore the larger the need for twin plugs.

I agree on not using the JE's. Those Nickies are meant to be good though with JE pistons.

Cheers Nathan - I will check on twin plug - the US guys seem to suggest that at 98mm you are ok - however once you get to 100mm+ then twin plug is a must.

We should catch up sometime to swap information/stories once mine is back together - interested in a "beer" towards Xmas? Maybe we could get John Ward to come along with some like minded 930 enthusiasts.....happy to head towards your way (I am in East Sussex).

regards Simon

cheers Simon

I would like to go to the Ace Cafe sometime, hopefully before the weather turns. They meet up every Wednesday. I was hoping to meet up with Mark (911Addict) when he gets his 964t back.
Would you consider meeting up with us too?
