930 SE Transistor box repair?

Our car is currently being repatriated from Switzerland where it let us down on a driving tour. Symptoms were misfire, erratic rev counter movement (without accompanying engine rev change) and alarm system upset (hazards flashing, etc.). All implies electrical problem to me.

The Swiss garage that did the first look to see if they could get us going again found that one of the two coils on the transistor box is shorting due to insulation breakdown - there was evidence of burning. At this point they stopped and the AA decided to repatriate the car due to cost considerations.

Bosch Part No. 0227300004

Are these items repairable/rewindable?

New one is c.£700! so any ideas welcomed.

Any other thoughts on what may have caused the problem - should we look for other faults once the car is back in UK?

Hi Larry

Do you mean the CDI box located on the left inner wing? If so then the answer is probably yes. My own unit is being fixed at the moment but its the first time he has tried a 6 pin unit rather than the earlier 3 pin units. Mine failed on the way to Classic Le Mans but the symptoms were completely different, they usually work or don't work at all. When they fail there is usually a large backfire, especially with Turbos, as the unignited fuel dumps into the silencer before igniting explosively there. Your problem sounds more like a battery/charging one to me.

Thanks Nick,

Yes we had back-fires too!

Not sure where it is fitted as I didn't see them take it off. Part no is the clue - is yours the same? It is six-pin. Who are you using and how much is it costing?

The car is now at Zentrum and they are investigating to see if there are any other problems.

Tim Bennet (impmad2000 on DDK) is having a go at it, but I won't know the price until its fixed. The easy route to see if that is the problem is pop another CDI on. They are common to all 930 3.3 Turbos, and all SC 3.0 motors: part number is 930.602.702.00, I don't know the Bosch number

The CDI can be replaced with an MSD 6 (I forget the correct one to use). Of course it is not straightforward and some other parts have to be changed as well. It is still much cheaper.

If your car is standard (I'm guessing it is) then it would be better to have the CDI repaired or replaced.
