John, thanks for your reply to to my query on start up smoking that I posted on the modern section. The other question I posed was possible reasons for a slight oil haze coming from the exhausts on tickover. There is no smoke when the car is being revved/driven - only on tickover.
One suggested answer was overfilling with oil which has gone into the intercooler - another suggestion was an imminent turbo overhaul needed. Any thoughts?

Hi Andrew - good to find you in the right place!
Glad you brought the oil haze querstion up: I omitted it from my initial response.
I presume that the haze / smoke is evident at the end of a longish run i.e. when the engine is good and hot, but is it definitely coming from within the exhaust system or from around it? If the latter, the most common cause of this is oil from an engine oil leak getting on to the heat exchangers or some other hot part of the exhaust and burning off. Looks distressing - especially when it exits through vents on top surface of tail - but needn't spell disaster; having said that, it does rather spoil the image, and it's certainly something that you should find the cause of for peace of mind if nothing else!
If the former, then it does suggest that valve stem seals or something similar in the top end are not performing as they should. Like I said, a checkover by a specialist who knows his 911 Turbos is definitely your best bet.
I don't think that Barry's bit about the overfilling applies in your case; that seems to be an issue that solely affects 993's, but I stand to be corrected.

John
