930 Turbo 1989 - Ignition problems

Have only just become the proud owner of this lovely car, which I am delighted with but it does seem to have a intermittent starting problem!

The engine always starts from cold on the first turn of the key but after any length of journey it will not start again and needs a few hours rest then will happily stat again. The engine turns over but there is just no spark. To try and remedy this quirk so far I have replaced the fuel pump relay and wiring, fitted new distributor cap, rotor arm and ignition king lead. Have also fitted a new battery fitted to an accumate maintenance charger.

Any idea how I can overcome the problem as my service garage is at a loss as to what to try next. One suggestion is it could be a imobiliser misfunction - does any have an comments or advice.

Are you sure you don't have a spark?

If so it is probably your CDI. You ought to check the coil in the dizzy though first for a resistance.

Hello Nigel, when you say there is no spark are you using it as a phrase or have you checked for a spark and there isn't one? Because if there is a spark then the chances are that it's the old hot start issue which usually boils down to it needing a new fuel accumulator, if it starts and runs perfectly every time from cold and will run perfectly for as long as you like until you shut the ignition off, and then won't start immediately afterwards then it has to be electrical, if does start immediately afterwards but doesn't if it's left to stand for a while after being hot then it's almost definitely your accumulator.

...... or else the non return valve in the fuel system isn't working.
Hot start problems are familiar territory for 911 owners, and 101 Projects for your Porsche 911 covers the cures for the common causes.
