Hi though Im a 944 s2 owner but a good friend of mine who owns a 1987 4 speed turbo came to see me compalining about having problems with his first and second gears. Very awkered when trying to put them into gear. Someone has told him this is a common problem and will have to live with it. Is this correct or is it something that can be sorted.
Its my fault because I talked him into buying a 911 turbo (my dream car) in the first place.

No, it is very likely to do with:

1. desintegrated rubber bushes underneath the gear selector and also on the gear selector shaft that runs in the transmission tunnel
2. Wrong set up of the gear linkage: many spannermonkeys simply do not know how to do it. 7 minutes at a reputable specialist does miracles.
3. When was the gear box oil changed? Go for swepco 201 or 210 from Bert Gear at http://www.partsforporsche.co.uk/
4. When was the clutch cable/omega spring properly adjusted and set up? If too tight, it doesnt engage the clutch properly and makes shifting a very very bad experience.
5. worse case scenario: ham fisted shifting from 1 to 2nd stripped the dog teeth, and shifting into first when the car was still rolling stripped the 1st gear dog teeth => gearbox rebuild.

Such a gearbox WILL NOT benefit from a short shifter as it removes the feeling to "let the gears fall in at the right revs" and if you're not prepared to shift slowly (count twenty-one, out of gear, twenty -two in gear) then you won't get a good experience.
Ah, and practice practice practice.
They do go rather well when mastered!

The 915 box does need a bit of time to warm up. Also when you stop guide it into gear and stop then put into reverse. Many people use Swepco oil to help it.

Check the cheaper bits first then it may need a rebuld on the gearbox.
