Hi everyone, newbe here. Ive got a power issue its got none. My Audi 1.9 tdi 130bhp has got more power, its 1986 2.5 8v I know cars loose power after awhile but it fells like it's producing 120bhp, so this is a loss of 45bhp is this nomal? Is there anything that could be causing the loss of power.

thank bradster

My 150k 2.5 was dyno'd at 150bhp a couple of years ago, that felt really good, reved cleanly and quickly,
it had had new plugs, leads, dizzy, rotor arm and all the contacts cleaned, that did make a quite a difference.

Hi Bradster,

Check all the usual as Mike says.

Check list I would suggest as you don't mention what has been done and when, is:

Plugs
Dizzy cap
Rotor Arm
Air filter
Oil filter/oil change
Fuel Filter.... really important this when i comes to performance loss (I know the one on mine wasn't changed for years and its the one thing people do tend to forget or leave due to its location)
Coil / HT Lead condition.

There's also the DME starting to fail or ref. sensor playing up that could be cuasing it, but I'd go for a FULL service before you do anything else, unless its recently been done, if not you'd be amazed what a difference it can make [:)]

If the usual tricks that Mike mentioned don't help, it might be worth looking at getting a compression test done. A damaged piston ring, a leaking head or a valve that isn't seating correctly will reduce compression (and therefore power).

Random thought - when was the air filter and fuel filter last replaced?

Hi thanks for quick response everyone. Ive put new dizzy/rotar arm/ht leads/coil/air filter/oil & filter/dme/spark plugs and set right gap,but I havent checked compression yet.Engine runs sweet but still got no power.I used G TEH performance meter today to check horsepower it was showing 115BHP it,s 944 1986 2.5.

thanks bradster

As you've done all the ususal suspects I'd be getting a compression test done as 115bhp is well below what even a high milage poorly maintained one should give.

Just a thought was the DME new?

Dont forget any reasonable sized engined tdi will feel quite quick.
Its a lot to do with power band ( tdi produces most of its power around 2000 - 3000rpm) and the mere fact it has a turbo which makes a HUGE difference.
Biggest shock I got was jumping out of a 2 litre Subaru into a 2 litre Turbo Subaru. one produces 120bhp and is ok , the other produces anything upwards of 220 - 300 bhp and goes like sh** off the proverbial.

How much torque does a 1.9tdi produce?
Tony

VAG TDi 130 PD is 310NM/228lb-ft stock (my one is currently around 290lb/ft).

That is probably why the 944 feels slow, torque accelerates you, Assuming the dampers are not completely shot, the 44 should feel much nicer in the corners though.

Very true... but according to the OPs' latest post, it does seem that some ponies have escaped from his corral

Hi just checked compression, I'm getting between 100to110 psi on all 4, think that's the problem, should it be 145 psi

Bradster

How accurate is the gauge - surprised all are equally bad - usually one or two are worse, does it smoke much? does compression improve with a few drops of oil down the plug holes?

just in case - its important to open the thottle to get sensible compression readings......before you scrap the engine!

No one mentiioned yet unless I missed it - cleaning the injectors by removing them, checking the AFM operates properly, checking your fuel pressure regulators first the vacuum connections then with a pressure gauge..........
