944 2.7 Speedo not working

Hello All,

A few weeks ago the speedo in my 1989 2.7 944 stopped working. It has had its moments in the past when it wouldn't work but not for any longer than a few seconds. Now there is no speedo needle movement and the odometer has also stopped recording additional miles. All other dials are working fine.

Having read through the various PCGB forum threads & Clarke's Garage online I checked the instrument cluster itself and the gears all appeared to be intact and working fine. This led me to change the electrical sender on the rear differential but still no joy with the speedo.

Does anyone have any ideas/a spare instrument cluster that I could borrow/buy to check for an electrical fault in the speedo?

Thanks

Ian

I wish I had your odometer problem, mine whizzes round at 3x the proper speed, I do more miles than Eddie stobart

Just a quick up-date on this electrical fault with my 944 2.7 speedo. It has now been fixed using an $8.00 electrical repair kit from Arnnworx in the USA which involved replacing (2) x capacitors and (1) x resistor on the dial circuit board. It took about 30 minutes for the actual soldering which was much less time than actually removing and refitting the speedo from the dash. However, the best thing being that it was also cheaper than buying a replacement instrument cluster on Ebay with the added benefit that I have retained the original dials.

Here is a link to the kit:

And also some general advice from the same company on Speedo repairs which I found useful:

Anyway, I hope that this helps someone in the future...
