944 alarm

I have enjoyed my fairly recently acquired 944 and only recently got around to joining the PCGB.
The car is great but had a weak battery so off I trotted to Halfords and installed a new one.
Clearly I should have read up the old alarm related info in the forum as a few nights later the alarm went off and will only stop when the battery is disconnected.
The car starts quite happily once the immobiliser is keyed off but of course is undriveable to all but the severely deaf.
I have tried clicking/holding down the remote button with no success.
Interestingly the former owner had removed the remote tags from both sets of keys.
Can anyone help?

It sounds like an aftermarket alarm to me anyway (the original fit from the '80s did not have remote plipping). Have you any idea of the make, from the plipper or from any boxes on the car?

I think the best thing would be to call a local alarm specialist and get them to check the system over. I called out one near to me and he only charged £25 an hour to check over my Meta alarm/immobiliser when I was having starting problems a while back.

Yes, thanks, I don't seem to have any other choice - the alarm is Meta, the window sticker bears the legend "Porsche Alarm Systems".
Any recommendations for Mobile alarm specialists in the Brighton area?
