944 arson! Need replacement advice please

Hi guys,

Some little w@**ers set fire to my garage three months ago and totalled my two 944's as well as two of my bikes. Way too badly damaged to buy back from the insurance company, I have taken the cash. Did get my Momo back though as a memento - but now mostly bare aluminium.

Went to look at 1984 Lux last night and was quite impressed. Loads of history, recent belts at a specialist, good tyres, sills done, engine pulled well and was generally in really good nick.

However, it had two problems I noticed and I was wondering what you guys thought the repair costs might run to (roughly)

Fault 1: Really woolly steering. My two both had quite tight and positive steering and very little play before the wheels moved, this one was the exact opposite. Any ideas on cause please? Seemed to be worse at motorway speed and unnerved me somewhat.

Fault 2: Heater was stuck on. I know this is a common fault, and one I had rectified on my old Turbo, but this one had the lever from to cold stuck on hot. I pulled the lever out to have a little look, but it seemed stuck solid - just a linkage do you reckon? Any way to check on these? (Can I just move the lever at the other end and see if it will then blow cold?)

I want this as a run-around car as my old Lux was so both of these will have to be rectified to not cook or kill me respectively.

Cheers All

Glad the experience didn't put you off.
1 - U/j s on steering column, easy to change not sure how easy it is to get new. The shaft has oen built on to either end.
Or rack worn - again easy to change but no idea of cost
2 - Dont know but sounds mechanical - I've not had to play with the heater yet!

Good luck with your search.

Thanks a lot mike.

Might take a punt on it at the weekend as it is reasonable money. Knowing my luck at the moment it will be bloodey both...............[:D]

Anyone else replaced either the universals or the rack on here as per Mikes suggestion? If so where did you source U/J? Seen a few racks on fleabay at not too bad money but its always a gamble with the used stuff on there...

Not sure if the early cars are different, but my last steering column was less than £100 new. Once you've paid the labour and VAT for fitting why would you risk a used one? [8|]

From the sound of it the car's had loads spent. They will all have some problems once you've bought them, your's is 26 years old after all, so a few little niggles aren't a reason to miss out on a car that certainly sounds better than average.

heating is either the valve, at the rear of the engine or possibly the bowden cable itself. They can get bent & not operate correctly - quite awkward & fiddly to attach a new one to the heater slider as I recall..

check the if valve is stuck - I have one somewhere you can have if you need it.

Cheers, just found a Shop for Porsche bits in Birmingham that do the column for a shade over over £90 and reconditioned racks on an exchange basis for good money too. I think that's decided it for me!!!!

Thanks a lot for your info and help guys.

sorry to hear about the fire. pity they didn't get trapped inside with it.[;)]

Reckon the wooly steering could be low tyre pressures together with worn anti-roll bar bushes, worn wishbone bushes worn rack bushes and knackered suspension inserts.
Good luck with the car.
