944 Audio Improvements

Chaps,

There is occasionally a thread on here which mentions audio in 944's, but I don't think I have ever seen a thread dedicated to it. There have been discussions about head units and whatnot but not much more than that. Hopefully this thread will pick up the pieces.

I have had my S2 for getting on for a decade now and I've never been totally happy with the sound in it. It is a 'standard' model in that it didn't have the 10-speaker option, just the 6x4 speaker hole in the front doors and the 6inch speakers in the rear panels. I have fitted an aftermarket head unit (a Blaupunkt DAB unit, as I very much like digital radio) with a home-made DAB aerial in one of the A-pillars. The built-in amplifier in this connects to the rear speakers, and there are RCA cables running to the boot where I have mounted a small, old-school Rockford Fosgate amp in one of the rear wells. This is connected to the front two speakers, which are JBL 6452 units, like this:

The problem with speakers in the front doors is that the window mechanism behind them catches the back of the deeper ones, and hence the choices are limited. These JBL units were recommended and just about work, although they have had to be spaced out a little and are very tight.Of course, you can't space them out too far as they catch on the end of the dashboard. I have also put a small amount of sound-deadening mat inside the front of the doors, which made a huge difference, and put some more capacitors across the front speakers to act as high-pass filters, ensuring that they aren't trying to play anything too bassy.

The end result? They are OK, but nothing more. The speakers distort quite readily, particularly on lower frequencies (despite the capacitors) and don't produce much in the way of bass. The whole lot is OK at lower volumes, but if driving more enthusiastically with the roof (and wife) out, the inadequacies are soon very apparent.

New speakers in the front would seem to be the way to go. Something larger, preferably, although I am VERY keen not to add weight and equally keen not to make it look too non-standard. 4 inch components would be a good idea but they don't produce much bass, and are both rare and expensive. 5.25inch components would be better, but will be larger and hence harder to fit. For reasons of weight, I'm happy to stick with four speakers and don't want to start adding heavy bass boxes.

If anyone has any good suggestions for things to do to improve the car's audio system then I'd be interested to hear. Equally, some photos of what has worked in other cars would be good. In the meantime, here are some shots of the front speakers in mine and the amp in the boot.

Two more bits to add;

- for the sake of completeness, here is a picture from Stuart on the Door Cards thread, showing a 6 inch speaker in a 944 door. This apparently has had to have only small alterations made to the metal of the door to make it fit.

- A very similar question about 968 audio came up a couple of years back on the TalkAudio boards, here:

http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/ipb/index.php/topic/364818-audio-advice-for-a-porsche-968/

Given the nature of TA, I suspect that that discussion will give you much higher-quality audio, with significantly more weight, than I am thinking of adding (I notice that they were all keen on sub boxes and tubes, which I am explicitly trying to avoid.)

What do you mean by "significant" weight?

I can understand the need to remove weight for track, but if better audio comes with a few kilos that would seem reasonable if it's important to you. I imagine few of us worry about the odd bit of weight in the road cars if there's a comfort/pleasure pay-off.

Would you constantly stop to add a couple of litres of fuel every few miles in order to keep the weight down with a nearly-empty tank? [8|]

My fronts are completely shredded. Is there a reasonably good simple replacement that doesn't cost loads? Edited to add that the ones you say aren't that great aren't even available now. Do you know the maximum depth without creating more work?

Good idea for thread Oli! Can anyone point me to a link for some replacement 6" rear speakers please? Are they 6x4 in a 1987? Just being driven off a sony head unit so no amp etc. I suspect my rears are original and made of paper

These any good for rears? Alpines on Ebay

I need to replace my speakers as the fronts at least are falling apart...makes me wonder how any sound comes out of them...shall be watching this thread for ideas....cheers

Pete

I have 2 way speakers in my front doors, the tweeter is up above the window control switches and the 6 inch woofer fits in the door in the usual speaker location no problem at all, a minor fettling of the metal but nothing serious at all and no spacer rings required. If I ever work out how to make my photos small enough then I will post a picture.

They are JL audio speakers and I might be putting them up for sale in a few weeks, but to be honest they were quite pricey but I'm sure most 6 inch speakers would fit.

In an S2 Id focus on the rear speakers. Bodies of this age will have provision for far larger speakers. Take the rear 1/4 trim off and have a look - theres room there for a pair of adequate speakers.

Joss,

I'd be quite interested in how you made that work. If you want to eMail me the photos then I can shrink them and post them.

Like these, but the speaker boxes are different in the 968

Used the crossovers and a new pair of Nokia tweeters

Great idea Oli.

My front speakers sound reasonable, but the grille keeps falling off on the driver's side, so I'd be up for new speakers and grilles.

Also, I'm looking at replacement head units....something plain and black! A previous owner installed a Blaupunkt, with a 6CD changer in the other DIN slot. The radio now refuses to tune, but fortunately has stuck on R4!!
Don't want the CD changer, and all I want now is a decent radio and to reinstate the storage unit in the other DIN slot.

You'd think somebody would make a shallow 6x4 speaker, wouldn't you?

I have the falling off speaker grill, the speakers are Alpine standard replacements but the tweeter forces the grill off, drives me mad!! I have managed to track down the Becker Cascade pro and love it!

Going with a Clarion XC1410 which is a compact unit I can get behind the dash also replacing all the speaker cable with OFC. Just need to replace the rear speakers.

Cheers

Thanks Paul....no bling, so the Becker looks just right. Does the Nav need a special aerial, or will the one in the screen do it?

Yes, sat nav, bluetooth, iPod connection, voice activation etc. Stopped making them a few years ago so you need to trawl around the net to find one. They come up on eBay from time to time. Well worth the effort.

Paul.

Graham, it comes with it's own GPS aerial, quite discreet, have mine tucked on the dash in the corner. Also comes with a mike for the phone and voice activation.
Cheers
Paul.
