944 auto FSH anyone?

At some stage over the next year I am thinking of replacing/ supplementing my 944 auto if I can find anything similar that does the job. I'm thinking oval dash, definitely an auto still, and something as close to concours as possible. It's got to have a FSH, preferably always OPC or specialist. That's a tall order I know, with not many 944 autos out there. The current one is having annual service (I've had it for 20 years) and has much of this though not concours: I've cared for it, not wrapped it up in cotton wool. I'd go for most colours (silver tops, followed by dark blue and black) apart from burgundy. I'd go for a 928 but they are a little too wide for my garage doors - not easily changed. Anyway, anyone with a topnotch 944 auto out there they thinking of selling?

While I prefer the looks of the 944 to the 968, I would definitely go for a 968 Tip if wanting to chop in a 944 auto for something a bit more modern, but with the same physical size. The gearbox is soooo much better.
 
Thx both. Yep, my 968 cabro is a tip. (I've had other cars that are manual but I'm getting lazy.) Thought it a little OTT to have two 968s especially given my love affair with 944. Was thinking someone in 944 group might have ideas, or say `I have a concours 944 auto that nobody seems to want.' Sigh!
 
I'm not aware of anyone looking to sell a really special auto at the moment, but I'll obviously let you know if I hear of anything.

To be honest, with the values of a half-decent Lux not much more than £1K, and autos less desirable, any that need attention to the 'box are being scrapped now. I had a message this week from a member with a rare colour auto in good condition who bought a spare for silly money as a donor car, but it's so good they are using both at the moment. I hate to see values dragged down, but it's worth regularly scanning the sales on places like e-bay for cars that are possibly good value, as well as the Club adverts from owners who have a car they know is special.
 
Thanks *so* much Paul: any ideas welcome, now or over course of this year, keep me in mind. My 944 has, for the last few years, cost more than it's worth to service. It's in pretty amazing shape, with only 2 owners, me for last 20+ - always garaged, about 2,000 miles a year, nearly all motorway - and a fully stamped book for all. But I know prices are low and this time the service bill looks like £4,000 from a Porsche specialist .. including new strut etc - a little hmm! I might just get a 928 to see how I get on w it (maybe even bigger bills), but still love 944s

Ouch!

That's a seriously big service. What is needing doing? I've always had an agreement with my specialist that they understand I only do a small mileage, so don't replace something that might do another year. With only 2K per year I guess you've hit every problem needing attention in one go, but that should be the car sorted for many years to come.
 
Indeed: I am sure you realise that you may well be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire by changing cars.
 
What the £4,000 covers. Usual service, tweak to emissions for MOT, and the following: 4 leaking power steering/ auto transmission pipes; steering arms; lefthand suspension wishbone, flexible brake pipe lead. Specialist is in London, so I guess that's one thing, but price mainly parts. Needed I am told to get through MOT. Views?
 

Get a second quote. That sounds out by a massive amount.

Flexible pipes cost next to nothing, I think all of my brake pipes were about £100 the lot. Wishbones are under £300 refurbed from Hartech. Don't know about the auto hoses, but surely they are just hydraulic hoses and can be made up by Pirtek?

I'd ask for a full breakdown of what's needed and the part numbers and costs. I know how it all adds up, but have a look at the fixed price menu servicing from specialists such as RPM in Cheddington, Promax, Hartech, or plenty of others. I don't know where you are in London but there are good specialists around, I'd certainly consider going a bit further if you can, say, halve the total.
 
I would have to agree That sounds like alot of cash for not much work.There must be a better/cheaper specialist near you.Or a wee run out in the car to a further away specialist and a night in a nice hotel with a good dinner would still be cheaper Iam sure. And you could sell it to the other half as a wee night away.
 
Would it not be worth looking for "the best 944 avaliable" auto or otherwise and then look to do a trans swap?
Or, are the auto's and manuals very different cars?
